It’s a fun, solid golf course, but given the price, I’d hesitate to include it on a three-round trip. At the same cost as Wailea Emerald, it doesn’t measure up. They don’t wipe your clubs or drive you to the range, you hit from mats, and range balls aren’t unlimited, among other things.

KAANAPALI ROYAL B303 had large rooms and housekeepers who did a FANTASTIC job keeping the condo clean. The kitchen was a letdown, though: just seven dinner plates, very few utensils, and worn cookware that left non-stick flakes in our food. There was no rice cooker, wok or slow cooker, which I think should be illegal in Hawaii. The oven, grill, range, toaster and coffee maker all worked fine. The master bedroom bed was horribly hard and uncomfortable. The pool was cloudy, warm and full of organic matter, more like dirty bathwater than somewhere refreshing. It seemed clear they weren’t treating or cleaning it from Friday through Sunday. We also found some low-life locals who were drunk all day and unpleasant around the pool. They were rude to two families with little kids who were there at the same time as us. The community has strict rules that put a bit of a damper on vacation, especially with kids.

L 101 was easy to access, and we loved the keypad entry. We stayed as four, and there was plenty of room. The condo was private, clean and stocked with what we needed, with comfortable beds. The golf course and flowers made a beautiful view, and it was a quick walk to Whalers Village and the beach.

The lanai had a lovely view, and at night we could see the sunset and a few stars. Whaler’s Village and the beach are within walking distance. We also enjoyed the friendly staff, clean place, pool and jacuzzi. The only downside was the tiny ants crawling over the counters, which was beyond anyone’s control.

The photos didn’t match what we actually got. Since owners rent the apartments separately, check whether you’re getting a room or the whole apartment so you can be sure of your privacy. Also be prepared for a $40 parking charge on top of your stay, delivered as a note on your windshield one morning.
