Hale Maluhia Country Inn

We loved hearing all the wilderness sounds around the area. We missed that a lot on the other islands. The common area had everything we needed, and we had both breakfast and dinner there. It was amazing. If we come back to Big Island, this would be our first choice.

Hale Maluhia Country Inn was a perfect place for our honeymoon in Hawaii this August. My husband and I stayed in the Banyan Tree Cottage, which felt idyllic, with a private parking spot by the door, lots of room, a beautiful bed, living room with TV and couches, mini kitchen, large bathtub, and private porch overlooking the ocean. The inn is up in the hills above Kona, a little cooler than the hot coast, and an easy drive from both the coffee farms and the beach. Dave and Miriam were wonderful hosts. They welcomed us when we arrived, replaced towels when we needed them, and put out coffee and a mini breakfast for guests in the communal area each morning. The place really lives up to its name, House of Peace. If you’re thinking of coming to Kona, I’d highly recommend this inn.

The feral chickens are LOUD, so take the earplugs by the bed. You can definitely manage here with Uber and no car. Lyft is much cheaper when it works, but you can’t count on it.

The lush hillside setting is full of trees and tropical plants around the rooms, and the inn itself is unique. We heard coqui and other countryside sounds at night, but earplugs are provided for light sleepers. The common areas were clean, charming, and welcoming, and we loved having coffee on the lanai. Miriam and Dave were lovely hosts and treated us like family. Each morning they provided Kona coffee, homemade goodies, and fresh fruit. Beaches, hikes, shops, and restaurants are about an 8-10 minute drive for most things, so you’ll definitely want a rental car. We had a great stay and enjoyed getting a little off the beaten path to explore the countryside. Thank you!
