The location is the only thing saving this place. The rooms stink, and the fire a few years ago actually improved it. Easily the worst hotel in hotel history. I'm surprised they don't have hourly rates. Do not book unless you're desperate.

The location was handy, and the scenery was pretty. Breakfast was free, and the receptionist was friendly, though check-in took ages despite our prepaid booking. We stayed just one night after arriving late and not wanting to drive farther. The room looked like it hadn't had a proper clean in a long time, and the tub had a hole with a sloppy patch, so we skipped showering. The pool didn't look clean either, though we didn't use it. I’d pay more or drive farther next time for somewhere better.

We spent a week at Uncle Billy's Kona Bay Hotel in 2014. Its location made it easy to get to the ocean and all kinds of scenic spots around Kona. For what we paid, it was a decent, budget-friendly stay. The amenities were fair for the price, which was surprisingly lower than our car rental cost. We had no complaints and enjoyed our time there.

There’s a guy on Facebook called RedMan Bobby who says he’s the GM at uncle Billy's. He trashes California's, and that doesn’t seem like a good look for a hotel GM.
