Antler Motel

We spent one night here, and the receptionist had left early, so there was nobody to help. There was no hot water, my friend had no heat, and neither TV was connected to the internet. There was coffee in the room, but my friend had no cups and my room had no carafe. We nicknamed it the Bates Hotel, like the old movie Psycho.

The bathroom looked newly renovated, and the fridge was nice, with a small freezer attached. The lighting, though, was very dim, with only two weak lights in the room. The closet area with the microwave and table was so dark we couldn’t use it without bringing in a camping lantern. The TV only streams and requires subscriptions to watch anything, so it was worthless. I also worried it could be a phishing trap to get people to enter personal login details that might then be stolen.

I was passing through and only stayed briefly, but it was just what I needed. Clean and convenient, and a great place for a quick stop.

For $90 a night, I expect a clean bathroom. Ours looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in days: the toilet had been used and left unflushed, the sink was dirty, and there were hairs in the shower. The carpet needed cleaning too, and opening or closing the bathroom door took serious muscle. The rest of the old hotel was serviceable, but the bathroom water came out rusty colored. Our black washcloth, like the towels, released black dye when squeezed. There was also an unlocked door in the room that opened onto the hot water heater tank for the whole wing. Service was extremely rude, and the cleanliness standards were bizarre. Not suitable for families with small kids. Don’t stay unless you bring your own cleaning supplies.
