After a long day skiing, we went to the hot tub and found no towels, even though the resort description said they would be there. We went back to our room for some, but neither key card worked. We were locked out in swimsuits and flip flops, with no phone or car keys, in 20-degree weather and snow. The lodge had no staff, and the check-in desk was three miles away. We borrowed a phone and called the number posted in the “lobby” for Keystone resorts. It only played a recording telling us to call back during normal business hours, with no after-hours contact listed. The after-hours details had been sent by text and email, but both were on my phone inside the room. Eventually I called 911, and they gave us an emergency number. Nobody answered the two calls or messages we left there. In one message I explained that my wife is diabetic and could have faced a medical emergency without access to her insulin or sugar. We waited an hour with no response. A very kind stranger, Derek, from Chicago, drove me the three miles back to the check-in building in lousy road conditions. We arrived just before it closed. The staff acted like it was no big deal and handed us new keys. The desk was only minutes from closing at 7, and we could have ended up sleeping in our bathing suits on the lodge lobby floor, with my wife without her diabetes medication or supplies. Staff said a senior manager would call, but that never happened. The condo itself was clean and orderly when we arrived, though its door had been left wide open. I figured housekeeping had overlooked it, but learned my lesson and should have reported it. I paid over $220 for a one-night break from the grind, which became a stressful and unhappy experience. Nothing bad ultimately happened, and I know these are first world problems. Still, check your keys and don't count on help from Keystone Resort management.

The room was nice, with beautiful scenery, and plenty of places were within walking distance. A lot of them were closed for the off season, though, so keep that in mind. I only saw two employees during our stay, which made check-in and checkout confusing at times. One of them was nice. The other scolded me rudely for trying to hold the elevator door for him, saying I'd “break it.” He'd pressed the button, so I thought he needed the elevator and held the door because I didn't. I didn't realize it would offend him so much. Being talked to like a five-year-old when I was just trying to be nice really soured my mood for a few hours.

Expedition station went well beyond my low expectations for both the stay and the service. The rooms were large and had great views, and there was a sauna, heated pools, and a jacuzzi. Our room had a washer and dryer, three bathrooms, and three beds, including a Murphy bed. The convenience was hard to beat. They even had lockers for snowboarding gear or skis.

This is probably one of the more affordable places in Keystone, and you get what you pay for. The location is handy: about a 5-8 minute walk to the gondola, in Keystone village near restaurants and stores, and beside bus lines that go around the area, including to Breckenridge. There’s free garage parking, hot tubs, heated pools, and our efficiency was roomy. The ski storage closet only had room for two people’s gear. The place is very dated. I heard from people who rented through VRBO that their rooms were better. Nobody is on site to answer questions, since the front desk is several miles up the road. I had to call several numbers to reach someone about cleaning the hot tub. Our third-floor room had very old windows, and the floor was cold by them. We could hear people in the pool and hot tub all evening. Bring slippers or warm socks, since there are no rugs. We stayed a week, but the room wasn't cleaned during that time. You have to ask for extra towels. There are no pool towels or robes. I hadn't realized our room came with a Murphy bed, and its mattress was terrible. We were also given keys for the wrong room. We drove back to get it sorted and were given the wrong keys again, but luckily a manager checked and caught the mistake before we had to return a second time. Keystone itself was great, and there are lots of options on the mountain. Next time I'd upgrade and stay somewhere else.

The location gives you easy access to the gondola, town square, restaurants, and two playgrounds. The shared spaces were well kept and pleasant. Our condo was okay, but it needed a better clean before we arrived. There was stale popcorn on the rug, one of the two small closets was locked, and we could have used more towels, especially for the pool. A dustpan to go with the broom and some dish soap would've helped too. Small things, but they would've made a real difference. The property management company also shuts the water off without warning. When I called to report it, the person said the reason for the unannounced shutoff was “undisclosed.” That's absolutely ridiculous. Guests should be told.
