Quality Inn Keystone near Mount Rushmore

The room itself was perfectly fine, clean, and had the number of beds we requested. The front desk women I met were both very nice, and I doubt the hotel's problems were their fault. The location was exactly what we needed, about a 10-minute drive from Mount Rushmore. Parking was really tight on the first level. Spaces up the ramp were more normal in size, but maneuvering out was still awkward. We were lucky there were lots of motorcycles around. If an SUV had been parked across from us instead, I don't know how many turns we'd have needed to get out. I hated that the parking pass showed our room number. That didn't feel secure at all, and the checkout date printed on it should be enough. Breakfast was unbelievably awful: the eggs were inedible, rubbery and overcooked, with cold unmelted cheese, and the coffee was barely coffee, more like brown water. There are no water fountains in the hotel, either. When I asked where to refill our bottles, they offered to sell me bottled water. How can there be no fountain?

Our stay was fantastic overall, and the location was super convenient. Everything was clean, and the staff were kind and helpful. It worked well for us with a toddler and my husband on a knee scooter because of his broken ankle. The rooms are a bit small for everything crammed into them, and the old hotel can smell a little musty.

The website photos didn’t seem to show the same hotel, and before getting our room we had to initial a form saying it was accepted “as is.” The bigger issue was the final night charge. My husband has medical issues, so I checked that cancellation was possible before booking. We learned before leaving that we needed to return a day early and told the staff at check-in. They said that was fine and that we’d only pay for the nights we stayed. At checkout, though, they charged us for the last night. One employee had told us something untrue, and the next wouldn’t speak English to the manager we insisted on talking with, so we could understand what she was saying. The company wouldn’t refund that night. Bad experience.

The motel itself seemed fine, but the service was awful. We booked a room with points through the app, then got charged on our card as well as having the points taken. Getting their own error corrected took days and a lot of effort, even though it seemed like a simple fix. Manager Irving didn’t apologize for his staff not knowing how to do their jobs. I can only assume that says a lot about his integrity and how he runs the place. I would not recommend staying here.
