The October 2018 weekend brought another Mark Twain presentation to McDowell County, with a different program from the year before. We also got to spend time with General Thomas J Jackson (aka Stonewall), who described his Valley campaign in detail when asked about it. Dinner was delicious again, and we got to share it with Mark Twain or General Jackson's Aide de Campe, Major Riley. A really good weekend and great value. I’ve stayed here several times, and the rooms have always been comfortable and clean. The food is out of this world GREAT, and it’s the best place to stay in the region. Motorcyclists, ATV riders, railroad enthusiatists, history buffs, fly fishermen, and FOODIES would all find it a perfect fit. I came back more recently for their Mark Twain Weekend and loved it. Every meal was based on foods Mark Twain wrote about enjoying. "Mark Twain" spent the whole weekend speaking and reading, which made it well worth going. I’m looking forward to the next one, which I understand is coming soon.

I was booked for two nights, but left after one and made the hour-plus drive from Princeton. At 4:37am I was awake and cold because the space heater in my room barely warmed it, and the one in the shared bathroom didn’t do much either. The first floor was filthy and strange, and the shared bathroom was dirty too. There were dogs and cats around, and the cat kept meowing outside my room. The owners seemed nice enough, and I don’t think they wanted to wear my skin or anything. There aren’t really other hotels nearby, which is why my company’s travel person sent me here. My travel person can burn in hell. If you love trains, trains, trains, this might be the place for you. Maybe you won’t get Hep C.

I’d go back, honestly, because I just love fishing. I came to fly fish for trout in Elkhorn creek, and there were plenty of fish despite all the trash and debris in the water. The rainbows were unfortunately tiny, around 4 to 8 inches. Not sure whether too many fish are competing for food or people are overfishing. The place itself is a hole in the wall, though the staff are super nice. The surrounding towns looked obviously depressed and very, very dirty.

We had a great weekend getaway as a group of five. There are plenty of trails if you’re into off-roading, and the creek has lots of fish, including the occasional big one if you keep at it and know where to look. It’s a very nice place, run by one of the nicest husband-wife teams you’ll ever meet.

A railroad buff’s mecca, this quaint B&B sits right on Elkhorn creek, so you can fish there. The three-story inn is a 90-year-old building restored by the host. It’s very clean and cozy, and the hosts are friendly.
