We felt completely ripped off. We paid $200/night and ended up cleaning the whole room ourselves, then the owners charged our card after checkout without giving us an invoice. There wasn't even a checkout process, we just left. Horrible, horrible experience, and I doubt this review will change anything if the owners are trying to sell. When we arrived at Tollgate Hill Inn, there was a 'For Sale' sign by the entrance. I think the owners may have stopped looking after the place because they're selling it. There were no employees around either. Our key was left in the lobby with a note saying where our room was and a phone number for the innkeeper, John. We were in room #9 in the school house, where dogs are allowed. The pictures online don't match what we found there. The room smelled strongly musty. We tried to air it out, but every window except two was either painted shut or too grimy to open. Dead spiders, mosquitoes and other bugs were gathered around every window. The floor didn't look swept, and the sheet had what looked like cigarette burns in it. We could only hope it was clean. The bathroom was really gross too. Yellow marks on the toilet seat, grime behind the sink faucet that looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months, cleaning detergent all over the shower, and a hair on one of the shower shelves. The towels were covered in orange stains. We called John and politely explained the room's condition and asked if we could switch. He said it was the only dog-friendly room available, so we reluctantly agreed to have it cleaned up. He said someone would come while we were out the next day. When we got back, the only change was that the Febreze bottle had been taken off the windowsill. John said someone had been by. When I asked for clean towels, he told us where the housekeeper's closet was so we could get them ourselves. We found a vacuum and Clorox there and cleaned the entire room. For that price, having to clean our own room was ridiculous, but everywhere else was booked. The room was poorly maintained and the service was subpar. The bed sheet, towels, bathroom and windows all added to it, and there was no one on the grounds to help.

I really liked having the same room for several weeks in a row, especially since it had a fireplace and they added wood every day. After a long day, that made cold nights feel much more welcoming than the impersonal chain hotels I'm used to. The innkeeper was friendly, accommodating and great. It's a small family-run place, a bit dated but cozy and quaint. Probably my favorite stay while I was in Connecticut.

John and his family were thoughtful and very hospitable, and the food was a highlight. Dinner was better than I expected, while breakfast was incredible. I stayed at Tollgate Hill Inn in January for a winter retreat with my old firm and loved how comfortable and memorable the visit was. It's a quiet, low-key place a couple of hours from the city's hectic pace, with a discreet feel.

The scenery is beautiful and the grounds are nicely landscaped, with hammocks and a peaceful, quiet atmosphere. There's also a great restaurant nearby. The rooms feel old, which fits the property, but they could use some updating. The beds were hard and uncomfortable.

There wasn't anyone at the front desk to ask for help. The room was fairly clean, but the place felt rundown and poorly maintained. The A/C only had one setting, 71* with the fan on high. Laminate was peeling in the bathroom, the tub dripped nonstop, the sink needed to be snaked, and the sofa cushions were ripped and stained. No hair dryer, either. This place is tired, outdated and in disrepair. Surely there are better places to stay in Leitchfield.
