This used to be an Extended Stay America, but LA Family Housing has bought it to provide affordable housing for people who qualify for subsidized rent funded by California and HUD. In the upper-crusty neighborhood of Woodland Hills, on the desirable west side of the San Fernando Valley, a studio with utilities included normally rents for just over $2,700 a month. But if you’re disabled, a senior, or chronically homeless, you may qualify to pay one-third of your income. That could mean rent as low as $50 a month, even on General Relief of barely over $200 a month. With homeowners and taxpayers in this area collectively paying upwards of one million dollars in taxes for every homeless person in Los Angeles, homelessness should surely have been solved by now. The agencies managing those funds have helped themselves to embarrassing amounts. LAHSA, for example, is under federal investigation over fraud and the misallocation of more than $2.4 billion, without even offering an explanation for where the money might have gone. I hope taxpayers know it hasn’t been homeless people wasting their money, and that they understand how grateful homeless people are for the portion that has reached them. God bless California taxpayers. Shame on the Democrats who promoted these programs as a way to help the homeless, when they mostly used the funds to help themselves. Maybe we should cut out the middlemen and make payments directly to the people the programs are meant to help. I’d call that the “Cut the Check!” campaign. Then the money could do double duty by stimulating the world’s fifth-largest economy to greater heights.
I’ve been very happy staying at this Extended Stay in Woodland Hills. The staff are really nice and go out of their way to make sure you’re comfortable, happy, and have what you need. Room service is excellent, too. The woman who usually comes to service the room is polite and a real pro. Thank you.
The one bright spot in this two-star hotel was Jennifer at reception. Otherwise, this was the worst Extended Stay I’ve ever frequented. The urine smell was overwhelming, and the cigarette odor was so strong it burned our throats. We wore masks for the two days we were there. The hallways smelled like an animal shelter, which isn’t an exaggeration. We even looked forward to the frequent smell of weed. While we were checking in, a customer complained about dog feces in the third-floor hallway, so thankfully we switched to the first floor. If they’re going to allow pets, they should replace the old carpets with flooring that can be mopped. The hotel also charges for handicap parking, and there were only two spaces. Pet-friendly, but not handicap-friendly.
The new $5 daily parking charge is my one complaint. For a long stay, that can add up to $150 a month, so keep it in mind if you’re bringing a car. Parking used to be included when I stayed at Extended Stay. I’ve visited this hotel several times in the Los Angeles area, and even with my worries about cleanliness and traveling during coronavirus, I felt at ease when I arrived to find an immaculate room. The staff and room exceeded my expectations. Fahmida at the front desk always makes me feel welcome. She even remembered me from when I wore my coronavirus mask last time and greeted me by name. She’s patient with all my questions, anticipates what I need and asks first, and makes sure I have things like shampoo and kitchenware. I feel taken care of. I’d definitely choose this hotel again when I’m in LA.
I cancelled my reservation and found a nearby hotel with a better price and a welcoming atmosphere after the staff refused to store my bags for even an hour. One employee had checked them in, then minutes later another shouted at us to remove them. The tone was rude, and the staff were disrespectful overall. They don’t seem to understand customer service despite working in hospitality. The lobby smelled awful and was filthy, and the rates were comparable to better-known hotels. If the lobby was like that, I could only imagine the room. Yelp should allow negative stars. This place deserves -100. Stay away.
