Moderne Hostel

I’ve been here several times over the past year, and it’s been clean each time, including the beds and toilets. The beds are decent for the price, basically a place to sleep. It’s right at the bottom of the village cross-streets, so you can walk your gear up to the village gondola and shoot up to canyon lodge. Worth a try, especially if you’re on your own and don’t want to spend $400+ on a unit. Let’s keep it nice n sweet.

Check-in was easy, with the key and instructions waiting in the reception atrium, and the place was clean and well run. We had a great bunch over New Year, though that may vary depending on your company. The showers were warm. It’s the only reasonably priced accommodation in Mammoth, but I’m not sure that can last with the propane company being bought out and prices going up, plus California electricity prices …

I’m glad Mammoth has a hostel. I come to mammoth on solo trips and always stay here, and I’ve met great people. It’s nothing fancy, but I’d recommend it if you’re traveling alone and want to meet others. The village gondola and bars and restaurants are walkable too. The beds are pretty uncomfortable, so maybe bring an extra pillow or some padding.

The kitchen was a nice bonus, and the hostel was clean and well kept. We booked a private room, which worked out well and felt like good value. Some rooms have bunk beds, while others are private. Check-in is at 3pm, and early check-in usually isn’t available, so plan around that. One thing to watch: a bear broke into someone’s car for food while we were there, so store food properly and don’t leave it in your vehicle. A clean, affordable option for a short stay in Mammoth.
