The room itself was the problem: it smelled strongly of stale cigarette smoke, and the shower curtain was filthy, even though the bathroom was clean. That’s what kept this from being a five-star stay. The hotel was a nice surprise in a small Iowa town, with a clean, modern lobby and really friendly staff. It was better than other places I’ve stayed, including a lot of bigger chain hotels. We’ll come back, but we’ll ask for a different room.

The beds were clean and comfortable, though I wished the pillows were thicker. Check-in was unattended, and after I paid cash, I had to work out the change myself. There was also a used towel hanging on the bathroom door in our room. Breakfast was another disappointment: at 7:10 nobody was there, and when I called the desk number, a man came down sounding like I’d woken him. He got milk for cereal and made coffee, but there was no juice, so I just had toast. We had a four-hour drive home ahead of us.

The water tasted like it had been sitting in a metal drum for days. In the room, the carpet was extremely dirty, the blanket had grease marks and cuts and tears, and the heater and air unit weren’t working properly. Housekeeping also left us without replacement towels after the ones from the previous day had been used. At the front desk, I waited ten minutes and rang the bell four times without anyone showing up.

I’ve stayed here a few times, and every time it’s taken at least an hour from making the reservation to getting the door code. Since the motel is unmanned, there’s no physical room key and nobody on site, which bothers me. For $100, I shouldn’t have to sit around waiting that long for access. They use Airbnb for the paperwork and check-in, apparently to cut costs and raise profits. It’s a hotel, not an Airbnb. We pay the same and get less, while they make more. To me, that’s a slap in the face.

We had no one at the front desk at 9:45 PM to give us our rooms. They wouldn’t refund me, even though they’d failed to respond and that was their fault. Trying to reach them was useless: they never picked up calls or replied through any channel. Easily my worst hotel experience. The Holiday Inn about 20 minutes away was excellent, so go to one of the other nearby hotels.
