Super 8 by Wyndham Martinez

I came for baseball and usually look for a Wyndham property, since I’ve been a member for years. I recently stayed at a similar place, but this one was much better than any of the Super 8s Wyndham owns now. It’s not a big property, but it’s very well kept, and the room had been nicely redone with good flooring and bathroom fixtures. The fridge was a good size, there was a microwave, and the Dish Network TV had lots of channels. They greeted me as soon as I came in, and even though I arrived an hour before check-in, they accommodated me. There’s a continental breakfast, but I didn’t make it downstairs, so I can’t say how the food was. My only complaint is a personal one: the bathroom vanity mirror is bright, which is nice, but its light spills into the sleeping area. A curtain or something might help keep that area dark while someone uses the light. Otherwise, it’s a fantastic property.

Parking gets difficult when it’s busy because there aren’t many spaces and the layout doesn’t help. The place was conveniently close to my job, and maybe a little too close to Dominoes and Jack in the Box. I spent a little over a month here and had a pleasant stay overall. Front desk staff were always friendly, housekeeping consistently did a good job, and Rocky and Bob, you did good. If I return to Martinez, I’ll stay here again.

The location wasn’t convenient, with no public transport nearby, and the sink was leaking. There was no service. My online booking said breakfast was included, but it wasn’t provided unless I asked the front desk. Then they handed me a small bag with an extremely small juice box and a tiny, hard snack, both close to their expiration dates. The hotel charges a high price as if breakfast is included, but doesn’t really provide it. I feel cheated.

I had to cancel the extra night immediately after the manager stopped me in the parking lot and basically threatened not to extend my stay because I was giving him too much trouble. I was shocked and asked to be left alone to go about my business. This happened at 9:55 pm, when I’d stopped at the office because one of my key cards had stopped working. No one was there, so I rang the phone as the sign instructed. The manager came, said the office closed at 10, and gave me a hard time about making a new key. He wanted proof that it didn’t work. I gave up and headed to my car to go to the store, and then he confronted me in the lot. This was after a run of room changes and key problems. My partner and I were staying in non-smoking king Room #216 for three nights starting June 12, 2024. The bed had a wooden canopy with mirrors that were dirty and streaked with handprints. I didn’t complain about that, but the two of us had hit our heads on the canopy several times getting in and out of bed. My partner also had insomnia, and I wanted to avoid any issue with him being awake and walking around very late, so I asked the front desk the morning after our first night if we could move. They offered a ground-floor queen room. Since my partner was asleep, I said I’d return later, but then was told the information had been wrong: the room was only available for one night, not the two we still had booked. Switching no longer made sense. When I returned to our room, one key card didn’t work, but I left it for the time being. Later that day our schedule changed, so I tried to add a night. Our current room wasn’t available, but they offered another room. They couldn’t extend the stay directly, so I had to make a new reservation online. Changing rooms was a hassle, but we only planned to shower and leave for our flight. The next morning, the other key card stopped working too. The manager re-keyed both cards, and they worked. A short while later, he called our room to apologize for the night before and said running the motel sometimes meant working 18-20 hours a day. The rest of the stay passed without incident. I read reviews that didn’t look too bad and thought I’d give Super 8 Martinez a chance. Big mistake. Manager, this is a hospitality business, and sometimes guests need help. I work in travel too, and my requests weren’t unusual. I tried to be as polite as I could. If a request upsets you enough that you stop a guest to threaten them, perhaps you should work in a different business.
