Grande Denali Lodge

The room and service were good, and the price was reasonable for the area. I rated the rooms three stars for comfort: there were no glasses in the bathroom and no TV guide. Small things, but they would have made the stay more comfortable.

The shuttle and its drivers were great for trips to town, the train station, and the national park. Rooms were large, nicely updated, and looked out over the Denali NP area. The day staff at the hotel desk didn't make us feel welcome, though the night staff were excellent. Food at the restaurant was overpriced and only moderate to low in quality. There aren't any moderately priced dining options on site, so take the shuttle into town for some excellent food.

The room housekeeping was very mediocre. We stayed three days and it wasn't cleaned once. The room we were first assigned on arrival hadn't been cleaned either, so we complained and got another one. The bar and restaurant have spectacular views, and the food was good, but expensive. Getting around is difficult. The hotel sits high on a steep mountain, and the shuttle only comes once an hour, so all your plans have to fit around its schedule.

The hotel is well placed, and reception staff were polite and responsive. The bar also has a great view. Rooms are starting to feel dated, and a room sold as a "view room" may look onto the carpark. In our experience, we had to pay to upgrade for a valley view. On our second night the power went out, taking the water with it. It came back at 5:30am, along with alarms that went off several times over the next half hour and again later that afternoon. Rooms weren't serviced daily, and you have to message to get your bed made. Beyond the restaurant and bar, there aren't many facilities.
