The Gallery room has art ranging from Renaissance to abstract, plus a full-size refrigerator and freezer with a separate freezer compartment instead of a little shelf. There’s also a dining table in the eating nook, and the bed is large and comfortable. My wife and I actually wanted to spend time in the room. Each room has its own character, with plenty of space, unlike the cookie-cutter feel of modern motels. The Cactus Inn in McLean, Tx is a rustic bit of Americana on Historic Route 66, about an hour east of Amarillo. The people in McLean are some of the nicest you’ll meet. If you’re driving 66, make McLean and the Cactus Inn a must stop. Bring friends and compare rooms!

I needed somewhere to stop at 3am, and Mrs Lee at the front desk woke up, answered, and got us a room. She was unbelievably kind and helpful. The rooms are amazingly well kept, with water, coffee, a full bathroom, and a Roku TV. I’d recommend this place to anyone out here in McLean.

We stayed a week and only got room service once. The promised complimentary popcorn and water never showed up, and I saw spiders and some kind of beetle in the room. It’s not easy to get to, since you have to go onto Route 66 and there’s nothing nearby. Dogs bark day and night, too. You’d be better off continuing down the road.

I’m starting to choose places just off the interstate and along Route 66. This one is clean and seems to look much like it did back in the day, except it has a comfortable bed, full-size refrigerator, and so on. I’ll stay here again when I make this trip in October.
