Great Northern Hotel

We had two rooms, and were disappointed with the upkeep in one of them and with how our request was handled when we needed to leave early. We tried to cancel two days before the final night and get a partial refund, but weren't given any refund at all. The shower wouldn't drain and had very poor water flow. They also don't have the accommodations needed in this climate for plugging in vehicles in cold weather so they can start. The gathering room is very nice, but it was very cold inside. I've stayed in worse places, but I won't be back.

The view and the fact that it's pet-friendly were the only bright spots. The front desk woman who may have been named jennifer or jessica, I can't remember, was friendly and helpful, went above and beyond, and deserved the manager's position more than the actual manager. The rooms were about what you'd expect for the price, mostly clean except for some mold around the top of the shower, probably from poor ventilation. We had two nights of drunken bar noise. The restaurant and bar are a local nightlife hangout and stay open until 2 on weekends, so expect drunk people in the hallway and lobby. Bring your own music if you want, though you'll still hear every lyric of the loud, cranked-up songs, and sometimes people singing during karaoke. If you want to be immersed in the local watering hole scene, this may suit you. Otherwise, don't stay here. The jacuzzi is janky but usable, except bar patrons walking by can see you. We needed to leave a day early and got no refund. They said it's policy and offered nothing more. It's sad to see a place with potential go to waste because it seems more focused on the bar than the hotel, without respect for guests trying to get away and relax. That front desk worker deserves five stars for her customer service.

It's a pretty ordinary place. Housekeeping started knocking at 7:30 a.m. about “room service,” then came back every hour until checkout, even though we had the privacy, do not disturb sign on the door. When they knocked at 9:30, we told them checkout was at 11. They still knocked at 10, 10:30, and 10:45. What the heck!

It's an older hotel, but it was clean and felt safe, and the staff were very nice. I liked having a fridge and microwave in the room, and they provided small bars of soap and shampoo. The attached bar is good for food and drinks. The free breakfast is minimal.
