Hampton Inn by Hilton Merrillville

The location was the one thing this hotel had going for it. It feels stuck in the past and badly needs an upgrade: our room and bathroom were dark, badly in need of remodeling, and had mold around the window and air conditioner. I wish we'd checked reviews first. We've stayed at Hilton hotels, especially Hampton Inns, without problems before, so we didn't expect this. Breakfast was another disappointment. The hot food wasn't edible, and I ended up throwing mine away. A bagel was so stale it felt like a rock; I found a softer one farther back in the row. There was already plenty of food in the trash, which made sense after I tried the hot breakfast. The woman preparing it was on her phone or speakerphone the whole time we ate. We weren't offered water bottles, and with mold around the ice machine, I wasn't about to get ice there.

I'd been coming here for a couple of months without any problems, until today. After a nap and a meal, I dropped my phone and realized it had slid under the recliner. When my husband moved the chair, we found my phone and a dirty, full sanitary pad underneath it. We were disgusted and left right away. I'm not sure I'll come back.

This place is a good value, very clean, and suited exactly what I needed. I don't really understand the low ratings, unless people came in with unreasonable expectations. I'd gladly stay here again when I'm passing through.

We only stayed because this was the one place that would take our dog. The room was tiny and badly run down: the bedside lights hung by their wires, there was old soap in the shower, and the phone was missing with wires left on the floor. Bags of garbage sat in the hallway. I asked about the soda machine, but was told the only soda and water available were for Diamond Club members, so I couldn't buy anything. Absolutely the worst place we've stayed. Do not use this place!
