Mountaineer Motel

Mike was kind and let us stay with our dogs when it was 1:30 am and the usual hotels by the highway were full. The room was clean, the bed comfortable, and it did what we needed. I’d stay again, and the owner is a great guy. It’s not somewhere everyone will feel great about, to be honest, but if you’ve lived a little and know how to look after yourself, it’s a clean place to sleep. The door had one janky lock, so we pushed furniture against it. I was glad we did: in the morning, a man tried the handle, and when I yelled he said, “sorry wrong room” and left. I carry and sleep with mace, so I went back to sleep. I can see why some women or people traveling with kids might feel unprotected. Better locks would help. There seem to be monthly clients, and the walls are thin. We heard plenty of arguing, but it is what it is.

Mike was helpful when I couldn’t find the key in my room. I called, and someone brought it over very quickly. We usually camp when we come to WV every Labor Day to ride our bikes, but this year we rented rooms instead. The rooms were clean and the water got hot, which was all we asked for. There’s a Dollar General right down the street with everything you need. Just don’t expect a Hilton or chain hotel, or you’ll feel out of place.

The rooms were clean and the beds actually comfortable, and the prices were excellent. The guy who runs the place is very nice and goes out of his way for people renting a room. I was freezing the first night, so he brought me a small personal heater. There’s a nice little park a few blocks away, and several different towns are within 25-35 minutes. I really enjoyed staying there last week and this week, and hope to come back after winter, since the wind is so strong and cold.

Mud wasps were at every door, and there wasn’t a coffee pot, just a microwave and refrigerator. The mattresses were on the floor, too. The bathroom tile was coming off and moldy, and the furniture looked like it was from the 40’s and needed refurbishing. There aren’t any restaurants anywhere near here. This place needs an upgrade, and I wouldn’t recommend it.
