We ended up giving up the room and driving 40 minutes to another town. We’d been displaced from our rental by the ice storm and power outages and badly needed somewhere to stay for a few days, so leaving wasn’t an easy choice. But the place felt dirty and unsafe for our six-month-old baby, and getting around on the ice with the baby would have made me nervous. I’d called ahead for a non-smoking, pet-friendly king room. On arrival, I was told the hotel was fully booked and had no pet-friendly rooms, only a smoking, pet-friendly one. The desk attendant was nice enough to let me see it before deciding. All the stairs were roped off with caution tape, so the only route was through one particular door on the far side of the building. As the elevator opened, a group of people came out with a cloud of marijuana smoke. The outdoor hallway to the room smelled of marijuana too. The room itself didn’t strongly smell of cigarettes, perhaps because it had laminate flooring, but the shower base was stained brown and the fabric on the chair was sticky with grime. The parking lot and most sidewalks were covered in about two inches of ice, with no salt anywhere, and there was no other way to reach the room. It was a bad experience before we even checked in for the night.

This was toward the bottom of the two-star Days Inn hotels I’ve tried. The airport location was ideal, the AC worked, cable TV had a decent selection, and I didn’t find any bugs in my room. There was no cigarette smell either. The fridge was so cold it froze my food and drinks, which I suppose beats having one that doesn’t work. The room was very grimy and needed the hard surfaces wiped down. The bedding had a lot of stains, and housekeeping made the bed without replacing it, so I wondered when it was last washed. There were strands of hair all over the sink and tub or shower. I was on the first floor, and a man who wasn’t hotel staff knocked on my door by mistake. There was a lot of car and foot traffic around the hotel. Breakfast was the most limited I’ve seen: whole-wheat bread for toast, cereal, old mini blueberry muffins, and a sad bowl of apples. The coffee station looked okay, but I got coffee elsewhere. The lobby smelled strongly like a gas leak. If you can afford another place, I’d choose it. Otherwise, this is what you pay for, with a lot more comfort and perks to give up than at other two-star hotels.

I was exhausted after a seven-hour layover, but the non-smoking room reeked of cigarettes. The carpet was shredded, used Q-tips were scattered across the floor, there was black mold on the sheets, and the bed skirts had strange stains. I left almost right away and went back to the airport. It felt unhygienic and unsafe, and I’m going to report it to whoever inspects motels. Don’t go there. They even refused to give me a refund. Gross!

We traveled out of town for an event after booking ahead, only to find that a mandatory deposit hadn’t been listed on the site. The receptionist kept getting our genders wrong, calling me sir and my husband ma’am. There were cigarette holes in the bedding, and when we checked the room, the bathroom floor was soaked. My husband started cleaning it up, then we noticed the ceiling was leaking. We told the receptionist, who said we’d have to pay to upgrade. This place feels like a total scam.

By 3:30 in the morning, I’d had enough. Something crawling over my face woke me, and it turned out to be another roach. This one crawled up the wall while I took a picture. I went to the desk and said I wasn’t staying in a roach-infested hotel and wanted a refund. The man there said I’d have to call the GM in the morning and that he couldn’t issue one. Given the unsanitary conditions, that was BS. This was probably my worst hotel stay in decades. I’d arrived at Days Inn around 7 pm and got room 310, which smelled strongly of urine and was very musty. I turned on the AC and left for an event. When I returned before midnight, the mustiness was still there but not as bad. Then, as I was about to brush my teeth, a roach crawled up the side of the sink. The desk said they were full and offered to bring bug spray. I didn’t want to stay in a room that smelled of urine and spray, so I asked for a refund and said I was leaving. At the steps, the desk attendant offered room 205, the jacuzzi room, for $10 more. It smelled better, and I saw no roaches under the sink, though there was hair and soap scum around the tub drain. I moved in, only to be woken later by that roach crawling across my face.
