The luggage attendant was sweet and helpful whenever we saw him, and I appreciated having to scan in after a certain hour for security. The front desk experience was another story. Of the six desk staff we encountered over three nights, all but one were regularly rude or outright mean. We stay at Hilton for Honors points, but this made us wonder if membership is worth it. We'll avoid this location in future, which I imagine the staff will be glad about, since they didn't seem to like serving paying guests. Check-in began with a flat greeting and no clear directions about how to make things quick and easy. We were leaving our bags until the room was ready and tried to bring them around through the side entrance past the “store.” We were told, “You need to go back around to the front, he's coming to get them.” Small exchanges like that made the whole process unpleasant, especially after traveling for hours and navigating a new city. The late-night entrance was confusing too. During the day only the left hotel doors work, but at night the card reader is on the right side of the column between the doors. We scanned it expecting the left door to open. It opened the right one, but only after a delay. We struggled for several minutes while two employees watched from the desk. A simple sign could have explained it. One finally said, with a scolding tone, “Patient. You have to be patient.” I understand staff see this often, but we’d only been there one night and didn't know the entrance routine. Hotel workers deal with many visitors from out of state, so I don't understand why basic kindness wasn't the default. If you work in a hotel, drop the New York attitude. Being rude to guests doesn't help.

Our room was old but comfortable and clean, and paying extra for a higher city view was absolutely worth it. We felt safe at all hours, and the staff were friendly, though we didn't need much help. The hotel is conveniently close to lots of places on foot and just a block from the subway. On our travel days, they held our luggage so we could explore without carrying it around. Shoutout to Sam and Mikhail for being so friendly and helpful. I'd definitely stay here again.

The location earns the three stars. Several train stations are 5-10 minutes away on foot, and I walked to Times Square and back several times over five nights. One nearby train goes straight to Central Park in just a few stops. I went for the Macys Thanksgiving Parade. I skipped the hotel's breakfast after seeing the negative reviews and got a classic NY bagel at Bagel & Schmear near Park Ave instead. Beds and pillows were just okay, and cleanliness could be better. The spring mattresses didn't give me great sleep, and you could hear everything. I heard crying kids and a woman on the 22nd floor yelling and throwing something. There was a great view of the water towers from up high, at least. I only saw elevator waits mentioned by others, and I was lucky to avoid crowds. This isn't a horrible stay, but if you need a great bed or a spotless room, it's not for you. I wouldn't overpay. The Courtyard by Marriott two blocks up has great beds, a clean room, and I slept amazingly there. Book this one if it's cheap, but I'd keep a return stay to 2-3 nights max.

We chose the hotel for its excellent location, with the Subway 1 Line very close by, so getting uptown or downtown was quick and easy. The hotel itself was okay, clean, and comfortable.

We spent a week here and were really pleased. The hotel is within walking distance of the subway and popular attractions, and the bed was extremely comfortable. When we first entered the room, there was a Happy Anniversary card and gift bag waiting for us. Front desk staff were very welcoming, and the delicious oatmeal cookies each day became something to look forward to. We're happy we chose this hotel and would come back.
