Kamway Lodge & Travel - Hostel

I was nervous about staying after reading some of the negative reviews, but the Kamway exceeded my expectations. I booked about three weeks ahead and paid $29 a night, which I don’t think you can find anywhere else in Queens. It’s essentially a hostel, so the service is a bit different from a hotel. Still, the desk and cleaning staff were friendly and accommodating, especially Michelle at the front desk. My five-person dorm was bright, comfortable, and clean, with no signs of bedbugs or cockroaches, which I’d been especially worried about. The bathroom was neat too. One of the best parts of a dorm hostel is meeting different people, and I met some great ones. Incredible value, highly recommended. Just know the difference between a hostel and a hotel. You can’t beat the price.

The owner personally helped me with some cycling questions while I was riding my bike back and forth to Manhattan. The customer service was great, and they even helped me park during one of the busiest times of year. It’s quiet and conveniently close to public transportation that runs 24 hours. I’ll go back! They advertised this hostel like it was a hotel, and I thought $45 got me a room with an extra bed, bathroom, and parking. I drove five hours from NH hoping to shower, get good food, relax, then head out. Instead, there was no parking at all. They had one space, occupied by what had to be the owner’s car. The man didn’t speak English and started talking to me in Chinese, as if I understood. It took at least 10 minutes to confirm my reservation, even though I showed him everything on my phone. It felt like talking to a wall, and he made it seem like I didn’t belong there. Then he said rooms were only for four people and I’d need to find three more people to stay. I suspected something was off because of the price and because the phone rang out three times when I called before check-in as requested. False advertising, and I should have trusted my gut. Much respect to those who gave this place more than two stars, you’re very kind. Stay away!

Management, please fix this place. It has potential and is the only hotel by the 74st station, so represent the city and take pride in the lodge. Everything is falling apart: replace the floor panels, get a new faucet and mattresses, and clean the walls. It needs serious renovations, a full 360 makeover could be worth it. At least there’s a TV and curtains, lol.
