Midtown Convention Center Hotel

We had our 9-month-old with us, and this stay made the whole trip more stressful. The room was tiny and unfinished, with painters’ tape still on the bathroom wall. The bed was very hard, all the pillows were flat, ants were crawling on the bed the last night, and the toilet barely flushed. The shower was slippery with weak water pressure. The hair dryer was missing, there was no bathroom fan, and the TV only got about three channels. There weren’t even cups in the room despite the coffee maker, so I had to ask for some. At check-in, staff said breakfast would be available. Hours later we asked when it started and were told there was no breakfast, then they covered the breakfast sign with paper. I don’t know if they changed their minds because the marathon made them busier than usual. The website also said we could get a fridge for $15/day, but that wasn’t true. We needed one for the baby. There were no ice buckets either. When I asked, I got a garbage liner to use instead. The staff seemed confused and unaware whenever we asked for anything, like another pillow or cups. Check-in was rude, and I’ve never missed home more.

The staff made even checking in a struggle. They were rude and seemed unwilling to do their jobs. I paid $50 for early check-in, but then had to wait until 25 minutes past noon, the time I’d paid for. There was no working air conditioning or heat in the room, no fridge or microwave, and the bathroom outlets didn’t work. The hotel’s water stopped running for hours, then came back brown. The blow dryer was broken too. This was the worst hotel stay I’ve ever had. I never write reviews, but this place deserves one. It wasn’t even cheap. Apart from the location, save your money and stay somewhere else. I’d never come back.

The young woman at reception was kind and helpful, and that’s the only reason I gave one star. We paid $180 including tax for one night, the cheapest we could find, and stayed only about six hours to sleep. If I’d known what the room was like, I probably wouldn’t have booked it. The room was extremely small and crowded with furniture. The sheets were stained, the bathtub was dirty, and the closet doors wouldn’t shut. A loud train passing nearby made quite a racket. I wouldn’t recommend it. If you can, pay another $20-30 for a better hotel.

We canceled just 20 minutes after checking in at 5pm. The room was filthy: dirt all over the tub, a missing shower drain plug with hair in it, and black specks on the bed. I couldn’t tell if those were bed bugs, and I wasn’t willing to take the risk. There were also piles of dirty laundry sitting in the hotel lobby. When we tried to cancel, the property manager refused to refund us, claiming coffee was missing. Seriously, coffee? With the room in that state, I wouldn’t have touched it. My husband and I both have good jobs, thank God, and don’t need to steal a packet of coffee. This place wasn’t up to standard. I hope the city inspects it so others don’t make the same booking mistake and have their New York City trip ruined.
