TRYP by Wyndham New York City Times Square / Midtown

The staff were very responsive when we told them the room was freezing, bringing up a space heater and extra blankets right away. It still seems to be a known issue, though. The 14th-floor corner room at TRYP had fantastic space and views, easily the best part of our stay. Check-in was a breeze, and the location is ideal if you want to be near Times Square without staying right in the middle of the chaos. Room service pizza was surprisingly good. My main complaint was the gym. It was quite dirty and had no sanitizing wipes, which made working out feel unhygienic. The HVAC and gym cleanliness need attention, though the location and staff were great.

We were really happy with the value and would happily book again. The staff were friendly and helpful, and reception felt welcoming. They can arrange a private airport cab at a flat fee, which is given upfront when they book it. The location worked well, right next to Penn Station and only a few stops from Central Park. There’s a police precinct next door, and Liberty Bagels is barely a minute’s walk away, which was great for breakfast. I believe the hotel offers breakfast, but we didn’t have it. My wife, our three children, and I stayed in a family suite with two large double beds and a double pull-out sofa bed, all really comfortable. The room was clean and warm, the bathroom was large, and the shower worked amazingly. There was a coffee machine and fridge in the room; the fridge seemed to freeze everything, though I think we had it set to the wrong temperature. Great little spot!

The location made it easy to walk everywhere, and we liked having the bar right by the entrance. The menu looked great, and it was nice that we could bring friends back for a drink. Our room was clean and roomy, with coffee and water provided every day. We really enjoyed the stay.

The suite was enormous for Midtown Manhattan: two full-size beds in one room, bunk beds and a pullout couch in the other, plus two full bathrooms. The room was fairly clean and decently appointed, and the hotel has a restaurant and bar as well as a fitness room. That part matched my usual experience with TRYP hotels. The front desk, though, made our girls’ weekend start badly. My friend had booked through booking.com, and I was the first to arrive. The clerks were immediately dismissive and said either we had to cancel her reservation so I could book it, or she had to send an authorization form with a copy of her license and credit card. When they emailed her the form, they put another guest’s name on it. I tried to ask who that person was, but the clerk shooed me away and repeated the two options for getting into the room. I understood the policy; I was trying to explain why my friend was uneasy about sending confidential documents after they couldn’t get her name right. It made me wonder how carefully they would handle her license and card details. They eventually noticed the mistake, but didn’t apologize. The two clerks seemed more set on saying no than helping us access a room we’d already paid for. Policies are one thing, but they don’t excuse talking down to guests, especially after the hotel makes an error.
