Essex Street Inn & Suites, an Ascend Collection Hotel

The staff are really nice, and the beds and pillows were super comfy. There’s takeaway breakfast, and one night they had delicious homemade chicken noodle soup. We liked it so much we ate it twice, with free cookies too. Rates in winter were amazing when we visited March 13, and I imagine prices are probably not awful in high season or shoulder season either. The inn is less than a block from Newburyport’s main shops and close to good restaurants and fun stores. There are seating areas outside the rooms, free safe parking, Comcast cable TV, and excellent wifi. There’s no lift, and most rooms are upstairs. If you have a car, it’s worth driving out to Plum Island and following the roads there. It’s beautiful. I’d stay here again.

We had a two-floor apartment with a fireplace and two bathrooms, and it exceeded our expectations. We’ll definitely stay here again. We booked around ten rooms for our wedding, and nobody complained or suggested changes about the location, though a few people were confused by the multiple buildings. The place was very clean and modern, and the bed was comfortable. Even with snow on the ground, all our guests found parking in the lot or on the street.

Kathy, Darcy, and Leeanne are especially lovely and welcoming. I’ve stayed here several times and wouldn’t choose anywhere else in the area. The accommodations are great, and the location in town is terrific. Highly recommended!

The room looked really cute, but we had an awful time sleeping. I think it was room 103, to the right of reception, right beside an exit door. Whenever someone went through, it squeaked and banged shut, and being by reception made it noisy too. We barely slept and felt miserable. We moved the next day to the building next door, which was nice and quiet, but less convenient for getting coffee, food, and snacks from the main building. Great location, nice place, but I’d give that first room one star because of the sleep we lost.
