I’ve stayed at Hygge House several times for extended visits over the past six months, and I’m there again this week and next. I live in San Francisco and run a PR firm for tech companies. Our Boston-area office is in Amesbury, and I needed somewhere close to work and not far from my mother’s assisted-living home in Reading, Mass. I also wanted the things I’m used to in San Francisco: beautiful architecture, ocean access, and walking distance to restaurants, shopping, barbers, and more. Hygge House checked every box and then some. The space feels warm and inviting, with thoughtful design, cozy furnishings, and a calming atmosphere that makes it easy to unwind. Downtown Newburyport is close by, but the place is peaceful and tucked away. Late afternoons are especially memorable, with plenty of natural light and a quiet mood before nighttime activities. The whole stay feels comfortable and effortless, like I can settle in right away. Hygge House has become special to me, and I’d absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing, charming getaway.

The automation-only service felt a little unsettling to me, so I’d give service four stars, though techies would probably love it. The room was small, but it had everything I needed, and I was VERY comfortable. Hygge is just minutes from NBPT shopping, restaurants, the theater, a complete wine store, and a nice library. The beach is a short drive away.

The room was neat and clean, and the housekeeping staff were friendly and accommodating. I appreciated having plenty of storage, the layout and decor, and a fridge for milk, apple cider, and other things. I didn’t cook, but the small kitchen came in handy for making coffee and tea. The windows had insect screens, and the little heater and air conditioner let me control the room temperature. I stayed 12 nights in the Moss Suite, which suited my needs perfectly. The Hygge House is on a quiet side street in historic Newburyport, steps from shops, restaurants, cafes, and groceries. Check-in and checkout were smooth. Management took a minor maintenance request and my concerns about noisy guests on two occasions seriously, and dealt with them promptly. I really enjoyed my stay and would gladly return. Highly recommend.

Hygge House had been a regular place for us since our daughter moved to Newburyport, and we’d stayed at least five times. On our April 2026 visit, we got a code for the front door, but the lock had been removed. The door was open and anyone could enter the building. We were asleep when a man began screaming loudly at 12:30 a.m. I called the emergency numbers in the information we’d been given, but both went to voicemail. They belonged to employees who hadn’t worked there in years. I yelled that I was calling the police, and the man stopped, then started again at 3 a.m. The next morning, after someone banged on our door at 9 a.m. and tried to come in, I texted Hygge House. It was the same man from the night before. I finally got a call back at 4:40 p.m. and learned he was staying at the hotel. The hotel did nothing to ease our concerns. He apparently made up a story saying he was the victim. We had no dispute with anyone. A dangerous person was screaming in the middle of the night, and when we threatened to call the police, he apparently claimed we had been making noise while asleep. Hygge House didn’t investigate. The former employees called us back the next day, which is how we know those emergency contacts were outdated. We left that afternoon and stopped payment on our card. This is not a safe place, especially for seniors or children. In response to the owner’s comments on my review, I have attached a photo of the pre-check-in email listing emergency contacts who had not worked at Hygge House for years. The owner still didn’t address that the front-door lock had been removed, leaving the building accessible to anyone at all times.

The Jade room on the third floor had plenty of space for two, and the staff were lovely and attentive. The hotel-style suites are cute, immaculate, and right downtown, with an ideal walkable location. We’d stay again, though people should know what to expect: the building isn’t handicap accessible, and the second and third floors are staircases only. Parking is a situation, with just three spaces for 15 rooms. The space behind the house is too narrow for a midsize SUV to park safely unless you’re a parallel parking whiz, which I’m not. We paid for a municipal lot instead, and those lots were all convenient, cheap, and an easy walk. The walls are fairly thin, so we heard neighbors much of the day and night. It was fine for us, but could bother light sleepers.
