The staff we met were friendly enough, but the hotel’s standards seemed low. The room setup was awkward too. Once the sofa bed was open, it blocked the way past the dining table to the kitchen, desk, and bedroom. And that sleeper sofa was extremely uncomfortable. It felt like it might not support anyone safely. I nearly paid to leave early and give up the prepaid stay. I can’t recommend this place, and Marriott should take it out of its portfolio. Even a Hilton would be better. The condition of the hotel was awful. The carpet was filthy, the cabinets looked cheaply painted, and the tub and shower seemed poorly cleaned. There was dog hair all over the sofa, a roach under the kitchen sink, and grime on the dishes. The elevator and other shared areas had visible smudges that didn’t look like they’d ever been wiped down. The free breakfast wasn’t dependable either. There was no hot breakfast on Thanksgiving, which was understandable, but the muffins, fruit cups, and microwave sandwiches ran out early. Another morning there was no breakfast meat, just eggs prepared three ways. When I asked the attendant whether any meat would be available, she said she’d cook some. I waited 20 minutes, then she came back and asked what I needed, so I’d waited for nothing. Saturday was the only day breakfast looked close to the usual Marriott hot breakfast, but items still ran out. The waffle mix was nearly empty every time. The hotel seemed full, so I don’t understand why that would be an issue. There were plenty of other places nearby. This was the most disappointing Marriott stay of my life, no exaggeration. The hotel badly needs renovation.
I’m here for work, and I wish my company could put me in a different hotel. This place needs proper cockroach treatment. The management replies to every review by calling it an “isolated” incident, but the reviews don’t lie. It feels like the franchisee doesn’t care about cleanliness or keeping the rooms hygienic for guests. They need to act on what they say and improve the property’s hygiene.
I usually stay here when I visit my daughter, but this time I was disappointed. I saw several roaches, including one climbing the wall and others on the floor. The carpet and furnishings are old. The website says “fully renovated,” but that doesn’t seem to include the rooms. Unless they address the problem, I won’t be back.
I’ve stayed at most of the hotels in Newport News and Hampton, and this is my favorite. The rooms are clean, breakfast is good, and the service is friendly. Shante and Odyssey at the reception desk deserve a special mention for always being professional and welcoming.
Our two-week-plus stay in mid-June was convenient while my husband worked locally during our cross-country move. The hotel is pet friendly and a quick drive from shops and restaurants. We used the card-operated guest laundry, outdoor grill, breakfast, and market pantry. I’d consider staying here again if I needed a pet-friendly place in the area. We had a King one-bedroom suite on the third floor, at the end of the hall by the emergency stairwell. The hallway between the elevator and our room was always hot and muggy compared with the lobby and suite, so we used the stairs to come and go. One day, after returning with groceries, our keys wouldn’t work because the door reader had a battery problem. We had to wait in that hot hallway while maintenance fixed it. The bedroom mattress was a supportive, medium-comfort King from AW Industries, a Serta licensee. It had a padded top and mesh sides on the mattress pad. The bathroom needed a more thorough cleaning. At check-in, there was a brown-red splatter on the tub/shower tile where the curtain opened. After our first toilet flush, we heard a gurgling sound from the tub drain. Signs said fresh towels would be provided after three days, but we had a “pet inside” sign on the door, so staff knew our pet was there. Housekeeping communication seemed mixed up. We took our meal-prep trash out ourselves several times and, after a week, had to ask the front desk for service, including fresh towels and sheets and vacuuming.
