We got our deposit back at checkout, and nobody even checked the room for damage while we were there, unless they went in when we were out. Still, beware if you’re younger: they charged a $100 damages fee for each person under 21. My friend booked and is 20, while I’m 21, but they charged for both of us because her name was on the booking. It felt sketchy because the policy isn’t listed on the website. We’ve stayed in much nicer chain hotels for the same or less, with better amenities and no age deposit as long as you’re over 18. I understand they’re cautious with underage teenagers at the beginning of senior week, but this fee policy should be visible before booking.

The rooms have been freshly remodeled and are clean, clean, clean. The staff are friendly and more than willing to sort out any issues you might have.

The beach location is great, the pool was spotless, and the staff were friendly. Housekeeping also checked that we had enough towels. The bed and crisp white sheets were clean, as was the rest of the room apart from a couple of details. It was spacious, with a musty smell, and the A/C had black mold. I tried cleaning it, but housekeeping should catch that sort of thing. My allergies went wild, with sneezing, watery eyes, and coughing. The A/C worked fine after we closed the curtains and turned the temperature down. The dining table was right in front of the unit, so we moved it to help the air circulate. The chairs in the dining area still had food crumbs and didn’t look wiped down. There weren’t many toiletries beyond toilet paper and hand soap, and no dish soap for the kitchenette we planned to use. The bathroom is small and only one person can use it at a time, but the sink and mirror are in a separate area from the toilet and shower. The room had a TV with Xfinity. The building seems older but cared for, and with a little TLC it could be better. I would stay again, but they need to get the mold under control. Parking is limited, though the lobby told us there was enough for one car per room, which worked for us. When we got our key, it was for a room already assigned to someone else. Everyone was understanding, but that could have been a serious safety issue. There’s an elevator to the upper floors, but it’s very slow, so the stairs were ten times faster.

The Beachcomber is an affordable hidden gem on 75th Street, close enough to pop between the room and beach, and to set up a chair in no time. It’s family owned and has been for decades. The owners are nice, keep an eye on the place with cameras, and the staff provide great service. It’s quiet, clean, and neat, with hot water and good pressure, some kitchen supplies, a balcony in every room, comfortable chairs, a cafe table, a good sized room, a comfortable bed, and new carpet. There’s an elevator, one parking space per room, and a well-maintained pool with plenty of seating. Awesome boutiques are nearby, and the boardwalk is a short drive away. For questions or to ask ahead about something, their website has the front desk number. I’ve had another great stay and look forward to more.

I came home with bed bug bites, so I wouldn’t stay here again, though the location is lovely. We were in room 301 from Friday, July 4 through Sunday, July 6. I didn’t see bugs during the stay, and at first I thought something had bitten me at the beach. Then I woke up at home with 4 new bites in a pattern I understood to be typical of bed bugs. A 5-star pest control service nearby said they appeared to be bed bug bites. I arranged professional extermination for Monday and another treatment two weeks later. I’d never had any kind of vermin infestation before, even after living in New York City for 4 years. I sent photos of the bites and my pest control invoice, and I don’t make spurious accusations, as my review history shows. Update 8/10: A certified bed-bug sniffing dog confirmed an isolated infestation remained after two pesticide treatments. The Beachcomber says its exterminator found no bugs in the room I stayed in, but I had no infestation before the stay and do now. Draw your own conclusions. I was having the area steam cleaned the next day, and expected total costs to exceed $5,000. The Beachcomber accepted no liability and didn’t refund my stay. Lesson learned: don’t skimp on the hotel.
