The first thing that happened after we arrived was a tense encounter at the front desk, and it set a bad tone for the stay. My almost mother-in-law was checking in while my fiancé and I browsed the magazines and merchandise. The blonde receptionist sharply told the room to be quiet because she was trying to “deal with something new.” A few minutes later she called out to ask if we were there with anyone. We eventually realized she thought we were under 18, even though we’re in our late 20s and just look young. After we signed the hot tub waivers, she seemed flustered and said she was stressed while learning something new and thanked us for our patience, but never really took responsibility or apologized. Then she asked if we’d ever heard “Bohemian Rhapsody.” I had to explain we’re closer to 30 than 20 and of course we know the song. Our exact age wasn’t her business, and it felt disrespectful to be judged so aggressively based on how old she thought we looked. We’ve never had that happen before, and it was a very unprofessional welcome. The hot tubs were enjoyable, though there was slippery algae on them. The room was okay, but it smelled musty, the shower drained poorly, and the toilet paper holder was missing. Breakfast was fine, but they stuck firmly to the hours: my father-in-law had to leave at 7:15 for a 7:30 ice climbing class and wasn’t allowed to take a yogurt from the fridge because breakfast didn’t begin until 7:30. The location is great, but we won’t stay here again.

Ouray itself was lovely, and the mornings and setting were beautiful. The location was a real plus, and we saw a herd of deer pass by while looking out at the sunset. The tiny hot tubs had algae in them, though, and you had to overlook the slime to enjoy that view. We stayed several days, but the staff made us feel like a bother during the few times we saw them, at check-in and check-out. The room was clean but bare, and the bed was the worst we’ve ever slept on. We’d come back to Ouray, just not to this place.

The hot springs were a highlight, with lovely views of the nearby mountains. I also liked that the posted map was updated often with each tub’s temperature, and the warm robes were available to rent for just $5 per person for the whole stay. Our room was cozy, and the bed and pillows were really comfortable. I paid for wine to be delivered to the room, but it never arrived. I noticed too late and didn’t ask about it. Room service never came by in the late morning or afternoon, either. I was unlucky enough to find a large dried booger on one towel, but there were extras, so it wasn’t an issue. Guests shouldn’t blow their noses on hotel towels, though a local hotel shouldn’t be expected to clean to industry-level standards.

The hot spring tubs were amazing. Our room was clean and comfortable, and everyone on staff was cheerful and gave us excellent service. We’ll definitely be back. :)

We spent a long weekend getaway at Box Canyon and loved how easy it was to get to the Hot Springs, just outside our room. The views were phenomenal, with a little snow still on the peaks. The room was clean, spacious, and had plenty of towels for both showers and the springs. I’d bring your own robe, though the ones they rent for a fee are probably nice. I do wish the springs were open around the clock, but I understand why access is limited to certain hours.
