Courtyard by Marriott Kansas City Overland Park/Metcalf

I usually stick with Marriott for both work and leisure, so this stay was a letdown. The room wasn’t cleaned during my visit, something I only found out after checking in. I’d hoped the hairy bathtub would be cleaned before morning, but instead I took photos, cleaned it myself, and showered. Later I spotted a dirty utensil on the carpet beside the desk. The room coffee was mediocre too. My meeting day started badly as well. I asked about checking in at 2 pm, before meetings starting at 6, since the normal check-in was 3. They said they’d let me know, then didn’t tell me the room was ready until 5, when I was nearly an hour away. After the meetings, I got in around 10 pm and found the bar closed. I’d been traveling since 5 am, so I went straight to bed. I had another set of meetings at 4:30 the next morning and couldn’t get fresh coffee until 6:30. This certainly wasn’t a Marriott-level travel experience.

I found this a comfortable, modern place to stay, whether traveling for work or leisure. The rooms are clean and spacious, and the staff are attentive and friendly. The fitness center and on-site dining were nice additions too. This is Courtyard by Marriott Kansas City Overland Park/Metcalf, South of College Boulevard.

I booked the hotel on November 11 for a trip starting November 21, then arrived around 7:30 pm after five flight delays. Check-in seemed disorganized, and when I finally got a key and opened the door, the room was filthy and disgusting. It looked like someone’s Freak off room, with freshly used towels on the floor, a dirty shower, and a bed that looked recently slept in.

The room was clean and well stocked, and check-in and checkout were easy. If you just need somewhere clean to sleep, this is a good spot. But service was a problem. I went down for a drink Saturday around 7:30 pm and the cafe was closed because they were short staffed. The attendant didn’t seem busy with anything else and probably could have poured me something. On Sunday I came down at 6 am for breakfast, but another attendant said they were closed while chopping fruit. I had to beg for coffee, and she reluctantly served a cup that was already brewed. I returned at 7 to eat. If service matters to you, I’d look elsewhere.
