Hilton Garden Inn Overland Park

It was a peaceful, uneventful stay, and the rooms were clean. We had checked in online and didn't arrive until about 1 AM; the man at the desk was very friendly. Renovations were still underway during our summer visit, though they may be finished by now. My only real gripe was how flat the pillows were.

The suite was fine, the bar was okay, and the staff were so-so. The big problem was having no hot or even warm water. We were on the fourth floor and were told hot water might take 10-15 minutes to reach us. After we'd waited, they said the hotel was fully booked and that at peak times we probably wouldn't get hot water up there. That seems like a very low standard for a Hilton. We won't stay here again. They should warn people that hot showers may only be available when the hotel isn't full and it's off-peak.

Nate at the front desk was friendly and accommodating, and he handled my noise complaint well. He was great, though there wasn't much he could do about the building. The rest of this was my worst Hilton stay, and I stay with Hilton a lot. The walls are so thin I could hear my neighbors, footsteps in the hall, and the ice machine about 25 yards away. The noise from upstairs sounded like someone jumping around in combat boots, and I woke up over and over. The floor slants badly toward the wall at the head of the bed, leaving your feet higher than your head. Even after stuffing pillows under the mattress, I got bad acid reflux and was adding more at 2 a.m. The showers are outdated and barely get warm. Past the lobby, the building looks very old. Light sleepers or anyone sensitive to noise should avoid it. I'd spend more for a newer Hilton; this reminded me of a Super 8 or Motel 6 and wasn't worth the money.

There are lots of restaurants and things to do within a mile, and I usually choose this hotel when I'm in town for business at the Convention Hall next door. The staff are always very friendly and helpful. The room, though, has often not been ready when I've arrived, whether that's 3 p.m. or 5:30 p.m., so I usually wait around ten minutes. I've also had a shower with no hot water in the morning, a broken iron, and a fridge that wouldn't cool.
