Coco Beach Hotel on South Padre Island

The room was clean and inexpensive, but service was hard to get. I called for room service for three days, and the phone line was consistently busy. The only way to order food is to go to the bar. None of the housekeepers speak English, so it’s difficult to communicate if you need room service delayed because of a pet. They also had an event and wouldn’t let us sit in the outdoor bar area, even though we were staying four nights. In general, the service felt more like a beach cottage for Spring Break kids. I wouldn’t recommend it if you want room service for anything.

Ms. Perla, the manager, is lovely, and the food and drinks at the bar are delicious. I recommend the Tropical Colada! The hotel is right on the beach, and the nights are a party. We had a great first night in South Padre and made wonderful family memories, though I wish we could have stayed longer. If you don’t like a party scene, this probably isn’t the place for you. We had a remodeled 2 bedroom unit with a kitchenette, though since we stayed just one night, we didn’t get to use it. For a longer visit, I’d totally recommend this unit. The staff are very nice, and there’s beach access right behind the hotel.

I’m a local, and the bar is cool in the off season. During spring break, though, they change things up and introduce rules without telling you. I was embarrassed as a regular for sitting in a spot where nobody was waiting, apparently because the couch and shaded seating are reserved for tabs of $100 or more. It would’ve been nice to know that upfront. I’ll still go, but I’ll find somewhere more low-key during spring break.
