Chef Charlie's recommendations at the chef’s counter really made dinner special, and Josue made booking both the room and dinner reservation easy. The staff were attentive and friendly, and our room was cozy with nice amenities. We celebrated our anniversary at Nobu Palo Alto and had a memorable stay. Everything went smoothly from booking onward, and we’d love to come back.

The location is the strongest point, with University Ave. within walking distance, and valet service is efficient. At this price, though, Nobu doesn't match the nearby Rosewood or Four Seasons. The Westin has larger, better rooms for less than half the cost, with more water too, if that matters to you. The biggest letdown was service. The front desk seems to handle every guest question, and the experience depends on who's working. I was told water was limited to two bottles per room per day, despite the room costing US$ 1,000 a night. I didn't check whether toilet paper or tissues were rationed too. The rooms need updating and feel small. The bathroom has one tiny sink that doesn't drain well, and the shower pressure is low. Its odd wood floor cover, meant to add Japanese flavor, feels unstable and unhygienic. I can't see how it's cleaned beyond a rinse. There's nowhere to hang towels and no armchair or sofa. The shades don't work, leaving big gaps against the walls, so you need an eye mask to sleep. There are barely any amenities: no business center or spa, and just two small sofas on the second floor for people waiting for their cars.

Frannie was wonderful with our party member who used a cane, making sure he was comfortable and safe throughout the visit. The wait staff were excellent too, attentive without hovering, and explained things clearly and briefly. We had drinks at the bar, and the house margarita was an unexpected hit. The omakase was incredible, and I also ordered the miso cod, which I've had elsewhere and understand Nobu says it originated this way. The meal felt Michelin-quality from start to finish. The elegant, clean dining room was lovely. I was also surprised to find the first-floor ladies' restroom immaculate late in the evening, which I really appreciated. The tea and zen garden behind the building is a calming spot in this otherwise high-stress part of town. We didn't spot any celebrities or local billionaires this time. Maybe that's for Nobu Malibu or New York, though I imagine they'd stay out of our plebeian view there too.

The room felt cramped and underwhelming, with surprisingly little space for the high rates. I expected comfort and a real luxury feel, but it came across more like a boutique gimmick. Paying for a higher room category also didn't get me any special consideration at the Nobu restaurant. There was no added value to staying at the hotel, so staying elsewhere and booking dinner as an outside guest seems like the better option. I chose Nobu Hotel expecting a smooth, premium experience in keeping with its reputation, but that's not what I got. The brand image and the actual stay felt badly out of step. I wouldn't stay again or recommend it to anyone looking for genuine luxury.

There are no real common areas to unwind apart from the restaurant, and service was uneven. Still, the rooms were incredible and made up for most of that. The synchronized automated blinds and lights were a nice feature. Room service was excellent, especially the scallops, and the in-room dining service deserves a mention too.
