We stayed one night and brought a car so we could see the whole island, though you don’t really need one. The lodge is walkable, but there is a bit of a walk involved. Room 9 is a dream for couples, with a breathtaking view straight out over the ocean. The shared kitchen, bathrooms, and appliances also made it easy to chat with other guests. Bill welcomed us with a tour of the building and its history, which made the place even more special. This beautiful 1800s lodge is a memorable alternative to a Portland hotel if you want somewhere with character. I loved my stay and already dream about coming back to the 8th Maine Regiment Lodge with my family. We really didn’t want to leave.

The views are amazing, and the common areas have toys for people of all ages, so it works well as a family place. Dawn is a fantastic host. The building is cool and full of history, though this isn’t the place to choose if you’re looking for something fancy.

Dawn and Bill, the inn keepers, were excellent and happy to point us toward what we needed on the island. We’d definitely come back. The kitchen has the basics for cooking your own meals, including salt, pepper, olive oil, and coffee. It’s an easy walk into town, with fabulous ocean views, and the place has history going back to the late 1800s. What a gem!

We spent a lovely time on the big porch looking out at the ocean, and the cozy feel of the place was just right. Bill had a gruff friendliness, but he was helpful at every turn, got us checked in, and helped start the BBQ grill. The building is old, so the bathrooms and other facilities show their age. It’s also very much a hostel setup, with shared bathrooms and kitchen areas. Still, staying in a place with this much charm and history, and a sort of museum to the 8th Maine Regiment, made it a 5 Star experience for us. It’s not a 5 Star hotel.

The guest rooms are sweet and comfortable, right at the water’s edge. It’s such a gem and a wonderful way to vacation in Maine. Guests can use the full kitchen to make breakfast, lunch, and dinner on their own schedule. Just clean up after yourself and leave the table set when you’re not in the dining room. Welcome to Maine, welcome home!
