The bed was the worst part of my stay. It felt like a saggy, bottomless camping air mattress, and this hotel isn’t cheap: water bottles cost $6 and overnight parking is $14. When I asked if there were rooms with firmer beds, the front desk told me all the mattresses had recently been replaced and were identical. I’ve slept better at cheap motels. On the other hand, the place is extremely clean and well run. The front desk staff are friendly and knowledgeable, especially a woman named Dorothy, and the complimentary breakfast was tasty and nicely prepared.

The bed was comfortable and the room layout was decent, but this was one of my poorer stays at a Marriott. It wasn’t awful, though I expected more. The bedside sconces have switches, but another switch controls them and the outlet too, so my devices didn’t charge when the power was off. In 2026, I’d expect at least one USB outlet in the room, but there wasn’t one. The refrigerator top also had a noticeable layer of dust, which wasn’t acceptable. Breakfast was the worst I’ve had at a Marriott, and being complimentary doesn’t excuse it. The soufflé had no egg and was more like a biscuit. Oatmeal was a tasteless paste; steel-cut would be better. The orange juice didn’t taste like oranges. There were only a couple of apples and one banana, no melons, pineapple, or berries, and no one replenished the banana after it was gone. No muffins or other pastries either. Worst of all, there was no protein: no bacon, ham, or sausage. Another guest said it had been like that for at least three days.

The only real advantages for us were being close to Mayo Clinic and having a kitchenette to cook in. We stayed a few days while my husband was at the clinic, but the price was way too high. The mattress was very soft, the pull-out couch was horrid, and there was no hot tub. The pool wasn’t clean, and the free breakfast was okay only if you eat processed food, which I don’t. We ended up moving to Helping in Healing Home, also on the Mayo grounds. It was peaceful and very nice, and much less expensive.

I tried to be loyal to Marriott on this trip, but Marriott wasn’t loyal to me. The JW Marriott was full for a conference, so I booked the Mayo Residence Inn at over $400 a night for an average, maybe below-average, suite. Nearby Hilton Gardens and Hyatt properties cost less, according to my colleagues. At check-in, the clerk offered me either 500 Bonvoy points or two shop items as a platinum member. She insisted I had to choose immediately rather than over my three-day stay, so I took a Modelo beer and chips. Then she started talking about how the items might exceed the $11 priority amenity allowance. That nickel-and-diming made an already unwelcoming greeting worse. The chocolate chip cookies displayed in a domed dish at the desk seemed like a nice hotel touch, but each one was wrapped in plastic, not fresh, and cost $4. The proceeds go to a nonprofit, but finding out about the charge was disappointing. My room had a broken soap dispenser on the tub edge, empty body gel and facial tissues, and half-and-half so old it had solidified. The kitchen and room surfaces were streaky and grimy. The back and side entry hallways were cluttered with maids' carts, furniture, and cleaning supplies that should have been put away. Parking was $14 a night despite acres of free parking across the Mayo campus. There was no lobby coffee at 3:30 a.m. when I left for the airport, while even a Fairfield has coffee 24/7.

We spent 25 days here, and both the cleanliness and service were wonderful. After my brain surgery, my doctor asked for daily room cleaning, and the team was more than willing to arrange it. Angelica, our housekeeper, was especially kind and caring. Pierce from the bar and restaurant area was great company, and we enjoyed talking with him. The staff were amazing, and I’d definitely recommend this hotel.
