Harborside Inn

The room was clean and the service was great, which mattered most to me. The hotel itself is nice but feels a little old and run down. Although it's on the waterfront, this is more of a commercial marina area than a picturesque spot. I walked around late at night and felt a bit uneasy, though nothing actually happened. Breakfast is available, but it's very basic.

The room was beside the lobby on the main floor and looked out over the marina. Only a few rooms on that floor allow pets, so we couldn't choose a second- or third-floor room for a better view. The room showed its age and needed maintenance. The thermostat was broken: set to 55, it ran continuously and made things very uncomfortable. There was also a musty odor, and staff seemed aware of it because an air freshener made for musty rooms was provided. Breakfast was okay, but there was no protein apart from boiled eggs that looked unappetizing. They were in an open container in the fridge, around two dozen of them, and I skipped them both mornings because I had no idea how long they'd been there. I noticed the proprietors use Costco for many supplies. Buying vacuum-sealed eggs with dates on them would let guests know what they're eating. Boiling and peeling eggs on site to save a few dollars seems risky and could invite a lawsuit if someone got sick.

The staff were really friendly, and our room was clean. It wasn't anything special, just a place to sleep. The bathroom door wouldn't latch, which was a small annoyance, but the bed was the real problem. It felt like a padded cardboard box, and three of the four of us barely slept. Three stars for a safe, dry place.

A good value, with clean, comfortable rooms that are well furnished and contemporary. It's convenient for getting around Port Townsend, too. Breakfast is free, and the waffles smelled delicious.
