Hickory Ridge House

We left Hickory Ridge House and don't plan to return. We paid close to $300 for a Bed and BREAKFAST while visiting our son at college, but Dennis told us breakfast was only “complimentary” and that he didn't care whether we came back. We had calmly asked if he would make us a few scrambled eggs and keep us as returning guests. Instead, after we arrived 20 minutes late, he offered only muffins and coffee as a continental breakfast, though we'd paid in advance as part of our stay. Here's how it unfolded. My wife and I checked in around 8pm after spending most of the day with our son. Gillian and Dennis, the owners, seemed aloof and standoffish from the start, like hosting paying guests was a favor. Dennis asked when we wanted breakfast the next morning. We said 10am, but he said the latest he could serve a “SAVORY BREAKFAST” was 9:30. We thought having to choose a breakfast time was unusual, but agreed. When we woke earlier than expected, around 7:30, we were told breakfast wasn't available then. We asked Gillian what time worked for them, and settled on 9:30. While we had time, we asked Gillian for a short hiking route. She suggested one she said was about a mile. It turned out to be closer to three miles, so we called her from my cell phone to say we'd be about 20 minutes late. She said she understood. But when we returned at 9:50, Dennis was angry and said our lateness meant we could only have the continental option. That's when we left. Personally, I expect breakfast and respectful treatment when I pay nearly $300 to stay at a Bed and BREAKFAST. Watch out for “Dennis the Menace!”
