Shade Hotel Redondo Beach

The marina view was a lovely backdrop for morning coffee, and we could walk to lots of sites and restaurants. My girlfriend and I came for a quick weekend getaway, and Shade Redondo Beach was just right for two. The bathrooms had loads of space and a wonderful shower, and we also enjoyed the onsite restaurant. When we’re back in Southern California, we’ll stay at Shade again and recommend it to friends and family.

We first chose Sonesta across the street, but regretted it as soon as we walked in. Shade hotel had a room available that day, so we switched, and it was the best decision. Peter and Rachel gave great customer service. They also offer bicycles for riding along the beaches or wherever you like. The seat was a bit wonky for my husband, but a worker noticed, came over, and fixed it easily. The room was lovely, with LED lights, a big minibar and snacks, and a tub on the balcony, such an incredible touch. There was mold in a few spots on the ceiling. With the ocean right there and the tub outside, plus people probably walking through the room wet, I’m sure that contributes to it. They had a dehumidifier running, which I thought was a nice sign that they care. It was a lovely birthday staycation, and I can’t wait to come back.

The attached restaurant had amazing food and bloody marys, with great service. The room was clean and room service was good. They greet you with fun frozen cocktails, and the service was amazing.

We’re locals and booked Monday through Wednesday while work was being done at our house, hoping for a relaxing break. Instead, this became a stressful stay. We personally saw the valet jump the curb while driving our car and damage the rim, tire, and alignment. My husband told hotel staff right away, then we spoke with two more people in management roles. All said the valet was a third party and we’d have to handle it ourselves. We also spoke directly with the valet owner. He didn’t want to use his insurance, disagreed with the dealership’s repair estimate, and resisted paying for a rental car. We ended up filing through our own insurance for damage we didn’t cause. It happened just before our child’s school performance and made us late. That evening, instead of having dinner together, my husband spent the whole time dealing with the valet owner and our insurance company. UPDATE: Daniel, thank you for responding. Our concern isn’t about insurance or the valet being a third party. It’s about how Shade Hotel treated us as guests. This wasn’t a car-to-car accident. We weren’t in the car, and a valet employee caused the damage on hotel property. We appreciate the apology, video, and contact information, but the hotel still hasn’t offered compensation or taken responsibility for resolving it. Asking us to say what would “make things right,” as one of your managers did, wasn’t appropriate. The business should have offered something proactively from the start. This disrupted our stay and family plans, and the lack of accountability and guest care has been very disappointing. Even if valet is outsourced, it’s still a hotel service, and guests reasonably expect the hotel to stand behind it. Unfortunately, Shade didn’t.
