Canalside Inn

The location worked well, and there’s a nice breakfast place just around the corner. When a dog barked for over an hour, the owner responded and got it to stop. Still, after reading the other reviews, the stay was a letdown. The room had an old, musty smell, and I had to pick up a clump of dog hair. The screen door was torn, and there was mold on both the soap dispenser and shower curtain. One night the whole hallway smelled of marijuana, even though it was described as a non-smoking place. We weren’t expecting everything to be new, but those small details make a difference.

Canalside Inn was so comfortable and clean, and everything we needed was easy to find. We especially liked the hot tub and the good coffee. It’s dog friendly, too, and an easy walk through town to the beach, with plenty of good restaurants and a great vibe nearby. We loved it!

The community room with its full kitchen was a great extra and made the inn feel more like home. Bryan and Kristen were kind, quick to answer questions, and made sure we had what we needed. Our dogs settled in easily, and there were lovely walks in the area. The rooms were roomy and comfortable, and the free bike and beach chair rentals came in handy for exploring. It’s also close to everything while still feeling peaceful. We were charmed by the welcome and thoughtful touches from the moment we arrived, and we can’t wait to return.

At nearly $500 a night, booked months ahead, and advertised as a 4-star hotel, this was nowhere near the experience I expected. There was no in-person service, so everything had to be sorted out by text. Even making coffee was left to us, though fresh brewed coffee in the morning should be basic at this price, as should the amenities found at less expensive hotels. The room hadn’t been properly cleaned before check-in. We had to deal with the window ledges and piles of dust ourselves. When we asked for a basic bathroom refresh, it felt like an inconvenience. We got replies like “if housekeeping has time” and “we’ll see if they can make it work.” Guests paying this much shouldn’t have to feel they’re begging for basic service.
