We’ve only been two nights into a seven-night stay, and the fire alarms have already sounded five times, all in the middle of the night. It’s gotten so routine that people aren’t even leaving the building anymore. That’s why I’m giving this one star. There are some decent things here. The room was clean and quiet, the beds were fine, and when we had trouble with the key, Barsala staff sorted it out quickly. The rooms can feel tight for two since the beds are full size. Parking is difficult, especially on weekends or when there’s a festival, and with no hotel-style setup you may have to haul your things a long way. Some upkeep is needed too, including broken windows and paintings left on the floor. I’d usually call this a solid four-star place, but those repeated alarms changed that.

This place is a dump. Water pressure is extremely low, the rooms are basic, and the key fobs barely worked. The hallways are stained, with dog poop all along them.

The biggest issue was the repeated fire alarms, and the way the property handled them. We were traveling as a family with four kids, ages 4 to 13. On the first night, there was a loud party downstairs with music, yelling, and banging. We kept quiet because we didn’t want to be complainers, even though the building has an alarm for noise above 50 decibels. At 5 a.m. the fire alarm went off. The kids were crying and scared while we packed what we could, thinking we might have to leave. Customer service said they’d call back in ten minutes, but never did. People looked out and went back inside; we later found out it was a false alarm. It lasted about half an hour, then sounded twice more when we tried to sleep. We got no useful response from customer service, but tried to carry on with our vacation. The next night, the party noise continued. The alarm went off at 1, 1:30, and 2 a.m., then again several times around 5. The kids hid under blankets in the bathroom. We had nowhere to go at that hour, and our vehicles were in a casino garage. We were on the fifth floor at the far end of the hall, and the elevators weren’t working during the alarm, so getting outside meant a very long walk. Neither customer service nor management ever contacted us. If there had been a real fire, guests might not have known what to do. My children were so distressed that they still worry about hearing that loud alarm at home. We checked out hours early and cut the trip short because the kids were exhausted and afraid it would happen again. I’ve asked for compensation so they can have a genuinely restful stay somewhere, but haven’t gotten help. They say they’ll get back to you and don’t. They need to address these false alarms and show more care for guest safety and comfort. I’ve seen reviews saying this has happened before. There were some positives: our unit was very clean, the essentials were stocked, and check-in was easy. Parking, though, was awful. We spent an hour trying to find a space. Call ahead to ask whether they might be able to assign one of the many empty spots in the garage. They may also move you to another unit just hours before arrival, as they did with us. I’m leaving this honest account for future guests considering Barsala Canyon Flats-Reno, NV, especially anyone hoping to save their money.

We had a great stay. The place had everything we needed to feel at home.
