High Meadows Inn

The location suited me well for a few days on a work trip, and the host was pretty good. The property is in some disrepair, honestly, but it worked fine for what I needed. When I first walked into the room I expected worse, though anyone with high expectations will probably be disappointed.

We were grateful they stayed open late for us. At 10pm, after an event left us unable to find a room for miles, we found this motel online and called. The woman kept the office open an extra hour so we could check in, and even went to our room to switch on the lights before we arrived. The king room was $85, an excellent price, and the service was amazing. :)

The one thing I really appreciated was that the woman at check-in used her landline to make an emergency call for me, since there was no cell service. The towels also seemed crisp and brand new. Still, I wouldn’t come back. The place felt ragged and shabby, and I honestly wondered if it was a front for something. There wasn’t any soap, Kleenex, or hair dryer in the room; the bathroom baseboards were dirty, hot water was limited, and the toilet seat was the smallest I’ve ever seen. The old, springy mattress didn’t help. One corner lamp only turned on if you screwed its bulb back in, then loosened it to switch it off. The pool was closed and uncleaned in midsummer. I saw just one occupied table in the restaurant Friday and none Saturday. I met the woman at check-in, but she didn’t welcome me or wish me a good night, and I saw only one server. Four other rooms were occupied the first night; on Saturday, only ours was.

The area is lovely, but I’ll find another place next time. This was our first and only visit, and I was glad we’d booked just two nights. I’d been told the room was updated when I reserved, but the carpet was worn and the room felt outdated and disappointing. I also had to ask for the refrigerator we expected. We had our two well-behaved, groomed standard poodles with us, so we don’t go out to eat. The woman in the office was curt and impatient, and stayed that way all weekend. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, being polite and saying please and thank you, since you never know what someone’s dealing with. When I brought our towels to the housekeeper beside our room for an exchange as we were heading out, the woman snapped that they’d get there when they got there. I wasn’t asking for maid service, just two clean towels.
