Hyatt Place Salt Lake City Airport

The only real perks are being close to the airport and having a free shuttle. The hotel itself is just okay, with little sense of hospitality, and it sits in the middle of an industrial area. Rooms usually average around $150, but during ski season they rise to about $350. This is absolutely not a $350 room. If weather or a canceled flight changes your plans, don’t expect flexibility. They don’t offer refunds and were surprisingly unkind about it. I know travel insurance exists, but for a short trip it sometimes just isn’t worth buying.

The room was better than I expected, the front desk lady was nice and welcoming, and the pool was very clean, though smaller than it looked in the photo. The bar was a different story. There was no waitress, so the nice front desk lady came over and asked if “she” was there. I said I didn’t know and just wanted a beer. She told me taking orders wasn’t her job, then went to the back and returned to say the waitress was washing dishes. When I said I could really use a beer, she reminded me I had to wait for the waitress, which is kind of funny when the customer is the one waiting. She offered to send my food order to the cook, so I ordered a burger while waiting for the waitress to officially take the order and maybe bring a beer. When she finally came, I asked for a beer. Without turning to face me, she said, “no you have to order food in order to have a beer”. I explained I’d already ordered food, but she insisted I had to order from “here”. She was very rude and didn’t apologize. I lost my appetite and went back to my room, with no beer and no food. Is that official Hyatt policy? I’m never going to Hyatt again.

The rooms looked nice, and breakfast was amazing. I did have two problems worth knowing about: my key card kept failing, so I had to return to the desk six times to get it replaced. Also, we developed rashes and pimples after using the pool, and they were still there days later.

The bed was really comfortable, and the reception staff were nice. Breakfast had a good spread, while the other amenities were pretty standard, okay at best. This seems to be a popular stop for people with airport layovers, and there's a shuttle for them. The highway and planes can be quite noisy, though. Downtown is about 10 minutes away.
