After twelve hours on the highway, all I wanted was a hot shower and some sleep. Instead, I found hair all over the bathroom, including pubic hair in the tub, and the dishwasher was full of dirty, funky dishes. I was exhausted and felt that going to the front desk would end badly, so I showered with my flip-flops on while gagging the whole time. The bed was the one clean thing in the room, thankfully, since I was only there for one night. I told the front desk at checkout, but she didn’t seem to care. I won’t stay there again.
The location made getting around SLC easy. The metro stops a block away, goes to the airport, and takes you downtown in about six stops, including to the arena. A ride to the airport was about $5-8, and there’s a great coffee and breakfast spot right next door. I was only in town for a day, but found the hotel convenient, the staff friendly, and the area safe enough. There were a few homeless people around the corner, but it wasn’t a big deal.
The rooms are pretty nice, the beds are very comfortable, and each room has a full kitchenette with dishes. You can also find good room deals through third-party sites. But I had two significant problems here, along with laundry that I would avoid using. The deposit rules weren’t clearly stated on the hotel website. They required $100 for incidentals, though the site only said they might require a card or cash deposit and never gave an amount. Cash wasn’t accepted at all; they only took a card in hand. The help section said the policy would be in the confirmation email, but I booked through a third-party site and couldn’t see it there either. We paid for another night before checkout, then were told we needed to pay an additional $100 deposit. I don’t know if that’s their actual policy since I couldn’t find it in writing, but I’ve never had another hotel require that when extending a stay before checkout. It was very frustrating. The do-it-yourself laundry is overpriced and runs through an app. The machines lock as soon as a cycle ends, so you have to pay again just to unlock them and get your clothes. When we stayed before, we spent another $20 total opening locked machines. The front desk said they couldn’t help and sent us to the app. The app staff gave us a couple of credits but refused a refund for the inconvenience.
We were paying $650+ a week at Sonesta Suites in Salt Lake City, yet the on-site manager treated us with hostility and suspicion. During our first week, he refused to let us extend because the physical card used for the original booking had been stolen, even though that week was already paid and we had other ways to pay. He also initially refused to let a family member rent the room for us, then changed his mind after we complained. Early in the stay, he knocked in the morning demanding a “random room inspection.” We agreed but asked him to come back when we were dressed. He never returned, and waiting for him made us miss an important doctor’s appointment. We arranged another inspection for the next day, and again he didn’t show. It felt invasive and targeted. Another time I took my service animal outside to use the restroom. As my dog was urinating, the manager drove slowly past in his car, watching us. A few minutes later he called our room and falsely accused the dog of defecating on the lawn, threatening a $250 charge. When I told him to check the cameras, he backed off, then warned that we’d be evicted if any feces were found on the property in the future, even though many other dogs stayed there. In our third week, he suddenly refused to let us extend again. When we asked why, he said, “I don’t have a reason, I’m just refusing your stay.” He gave us one hour to leave or said he’d call the police. My fiancé and I are both disabled. I have Multiple Sclerosis, with chronic pain and mobility issues. My fiancé has a severe back injury from an automobile accident and had recently had a toe amputated. Telling us to pack everything and move within an hour was cruel and unreasonable. The manager stood outside our room watching us struggle with our belongings, clearly seeing my fiancé in pain. He said, “I used to help guests move, but I don’t anymore because I’m too busy.” He apparently wasn’t too busy to stand there and watch. After forcing us out, he trespassed us from the property and banned us from returning, with no legitimate reason. We were kicked out and barred from a hotel where we were paying premium weekly rates. I see this as intimidation, discrimination, and abuse of authority. I’ve personally seen him target other guests and harass them until they leave. His conduct is hostile and unprofessional, and not what anyone should experience at a Sonesta property. We’ll address his actions through the proper channels. Until Sonesta corrects or replaces the management here, I strongly advise others, especially disabled guests, to stay elsewhere.
The price is reasonable, but there are some drawbacks to keep in mind. There was no room service for a week, parking cost extra even though that wasn’t mentioned in the reservation, and they didn’t refund the security deposit after charging it. There were also homeless people around the parking lot.
