Lily made us feel very welcome at Brackenridge House. She was sweet and gave us what we asked for, including a portable electric heater when we mentioned we get cold easily. We asked about checking out around 11:30 instead of 11, and she let us stay until 12:30. When we left, she greeted us with hugs and thanked us for staying at her house. We spent seven nights there. The breakfasts she made each day were delicious, filling, and varied. The neighborhood was quiet, right in the lovely King William District. The riverwalk was a short walk away, and the more touristy part took about 15-20 minutes on foot. The only noise we really heard was the occasional train horn. Our only complaint was that there wasn't anywhere to put our shampoo and conditioner except on the shower floor. If we come back to San Antonio, we'd absolutely stay here again. For a quiet place in a nice, safe area with a lovely hostess and good breakfasts, Brackenridge House is a great choice.

The service was a mix. We got fresh towels, trash taken out, a day bed set up, and a map with helpful comments and directions for finding things to do. But flexibility around check-in and checkout was difficult. I was writing this on the porch while my husband took our guests to the airport, and I was told I had to be out by 11:30. I also couldn't store my luggage by the stairs even for an hour. That brought my rating down from perhaps a 4 to a 3. We'd come to San Antonio to show Texas to friends from Massachusetts. Before we arrived, Lily was very pleasant on the phone. Our vehicle was full of our things and our friends' luggage after we picked them up at the airport. I asked if we could check in early to unload before meeting their plane. The answer was no, but she let us leave some gear by the first-floor stairs, which worked. The house is old, like the other large houses in King William, and the front could use a fresh coat of paint to look more inviting. The suites have a nice layout, with a bedroom, kitchenette, and bathroom, and enough room for a couple. The upholstered furniture and rugs are worn and could use a refresh, but the bathrooms are new and nice, and the towels are thick and clean. For comfort and safety, the AC isn't controlled in the rooms, and the ceiling fans didn't keep us comfortable at the home's preset temperature. The shower has no grab bar, and I slipped twice but managed to recover. Since some guests may be older, like me, that should be fixed. The new toilet also runs on and off, which is noticeable at night when someone is trying to sleep.

If you want a modern hotel with no character, this probably isn't your place. It felt like the traditional bed and breakfast I remember from when I was a kid, with a homemade breakfast and a chance to actually meet the host, who was great. The location is good, though at about a mile from town it's a bit far to walk everywhere. Uber is an option. The river walk isn't far, and you can pick up an e-bike there and ride south to the old missions, which was very cool. I'd highly recommend staying here.

We stayed three nights at Wren's Nest in the first week of Nov 2025, and practically had the place to ourselves. Breakfast was excellent, served promptly, and changed each day. We ate on the front porch, watching neighbors walk dogs and push strollers while blue jays, grackles, and squirrels moved around in the live oaks overhead. Lily responded quickly to requests and had good suggestions for things to do in San Antonio. The house and neighborhood are beautiful. Nearly every house we passed seemed historic and one of a kind, and we wished we'd had more time to wander. Downtown and the River Walk are close. We used Lyft or Uber for $6-8 because we were lazy and didn't want to pay for parking, but it's less than a mile and walkable. The free parking and included breakfast also made the stay probably cheaper than a downtown hotel, at least for us. Our room was clean, the bed comfortable, and the decor and antique furniture suited the house. The kitchenette was handy, and off-street parking was nice to have. There weren't many downsides. It is a city, so you hear people out and about and distant train whistles. Nothing woke me, but don't expect Amish-country quiet. The driveway is a little narrow, though a standard car fits fine and an Excursion would be tight. Also, there isn't a common room or indoor dining space where guests can gather and share a meal. The porches are shared spaces, but we like that social part of B&Bs. For a few days in San Antonio, Brackenridge House B&B is a great alternative to a downtown hotel. You feel like you're in a distinctive neighborhood instead of a corporate hotel that could be anywhere.

Lily and Roland, thanks for a lovely stay and your warm hospitality. We spent five nights at the Brackenridge B&B in October 2025, and would definitely return. If you're in the Wren’s Nest Suite, check out the Gibson Girl print on the wall. You'll swear it looks like Lily herself. Lily was gracious, caring, and accommodating. She made tasty, nourishing breakfasts without fuss, with fruit, sausage, orange juice, and something different each day, such as waffles, muffins, or apple French toast. She even took care of dietary needs without us having to ask. The clean, comfortable old home is in the King William Historic District, just south of the River Walk. You can walk downtown easily, and there are charming restaurants, shops, and services nearby. It's a safe, quiet neighborhood with friendly people, grand Victorian houses, and shade trees. We might have walked the mile or so to the Alamo, but it was hot that day, so we drove. We were there for First Friday, when shop owners, artists, craftspeople, and restaurants open their doors. It was extra fun because Oktoberfest was happening too. We joined in the Chicken Dance and had bratwurst, potato salad, and seasonal beer.
