Days Inn by Wyndham San Diego/Downtown/Convention Center

The location made this good value for us. We walked nine minutes to San Diego Civic Theatre for Wicked, and the neighborhood felt safe, with luxury apartments nearby. The zoo was about a six minute drive the next day. The room needs attention, with scratched furniture, an uneven bathroom floor, and walls that need repainting. Breakfast comes in a take-out container. I noticed a painting crew when we left, so it looks like management plans to update the hotel. If they improve the rooms’ appearance, I think it’s worth staying. We knew it was a budget hotel and expected what we paid for.

We booked Days Inn San Deigo for the included breakfast and on-site laundry, but neither was available because of construction. We weren’t told about the work ahead of time, and with two small children we would have booked elsewhere. Drilling, hammering, and other loud noise woke them at 7am every morning. Construction dust covered our shoes, luggage, and other belongings throughout the stay, then got into our car and led to a cleaning fee from the car hire company. The TV didn’t work, and the door lock failed twice, so I had to get replacement keys. When I went to the front desk, the clerk said I’d have to wait because he was on a lunch break. I insisted, and he helped me, though begrudgingly. There was also a cat in a cage on the desk inside reception, for some reason. The elevator was loud and terrifying to use, and looked barely held together. The whole place felt dishevelled and unsafe, with mold, dirt, and trash everywhere. This was the worst hotel experience my family has ever had, and I’m seeking a full refund.

On April 14, 2025 around 4:30pm, I went with my mom to help her check in. She’d booked by phone, and they had overbooked her by one night. She just wanted to know whether she’d get her money back. The front desk clerk kept saying she had to call Wyndham directly. She’d tried the night before and hoped to sort it out in person when she arrived. My mom is in her 60’s and technology can be difficult for her. We were in the lobby maybe four minutes, and no one raised their voice. Still, instead of being patient or helpful, the clerk cancelled her reservation on the spot and threatened to call the police. I’ve never seen such terrible customer service. If you want to be treated kindly, I highly recommend the Best Western next store. They were incredibly accommodating, their rooms are great, and they have a nice breakfast.

There wasn’t any staff on site when I arrived, so I had to wait to check in. Most of the facilities either didn’t work or needed someone’s help to get going. It’s no longer a Days Inn, and it shows. I wouldn’t recommend it.
