ITH Mission Beach Backpacker Hostel

A few practical things: smoking isn’t allowed on the premises, which some guests may prefer. The female only dorm bunks aren’t bolted down, so they wobble a little when you climb up or down from the top bunk. The mattress was soft enough, and I slept fine with earplugs. The bathrooms and showers are practical and just right, though a bit tight for bigger people. The space itself is cozy. As a woman traveling alone in the United States, I can sometimes feel I need to watch my back. At ITH Mission Beach, I felt completely safe. It’s an outstanding quality in a place to stay, anywhere. Staff seemed mindful and quietly alert, with natural eye contact, politeness, and a warm, respectful atmosphere. Floors were cleaned daily and nightly, the folded hand towels by the bathroom sinks seemed to be refreshed often, and the restroom was fully stocked with toilet paper. When the coffee ran out late in the morning, a staff member made more without me having to ask. For a solo traveler or nomad, stopping here is one of the best ways to get the most out of Mission Beach San Diego.

The ITH team were helpful and always looking after everyone. The kitchen and living room stayed super clean and cozy, with enough space even when everyone was home. My female dorm room was clean too, and the beds were very comfortable. The location is perfect: less than 500ft from the beach, across from the amusement park with fun rollercoasters, and within walking distance of lots of restaurants. I enjoyed the beautiful, scenic walk to Pacific beach for groceries. I’ve stayed one night and up to 14, and this is one of my favorite hostels. The thoughtful volunteers and welcoming atmosphere make it feel like an actual home instead of a pit stop. Can’t wait to visit again. Thank you ITH!

Reuben, the hostel manager, is a big reason to come here. He cares deeply about the work, remembers everyone’s names, and looks out for people. With the volunteers, he runs great events every night. I got to take a salsa lesson that lasted over an hour and spent time chatting with great people each day. Even though I was there only five days, the hostel felt like a temporary home and community. It’s the best hostel I’ve encountered, with the best people. The location worked well for my plans, close to the beach and just around the corner from bus 8. PB is a 20 minute walk or a couple of bus stops away, and it was easy to get to a hotel like the Hyatt for a conference. My room was clean and cozy, and the common space was cute and warm. In February, I never had to wait for a bathroom or shower, though the shower water did get cold now and then.

There’s a living room, kitchen, dining area, and a small outdoor smoking spot. The hostel is small, with small rooms, but the spaces were cozy and well kept. Fresh air came through the windows, with views of sunrise and sunset. Benji, Addie, Madeline, Victor, and the manager Matthew kept the place clean and quiet at night while creating a friendly atmosphere. They were helpful and professional. Great location and a great stay.
