Pantai Inn

We spent Christmas with our daughter, who lives in SD, and loved our stay at Pantai. It has Indonesian-inspired decor and a retro, slightly funky feel that adds to the charm, though it may not suit someone looking for a fancy, modern place. Our two-bedroom suite faced the ocean and had a full kitchen, smart TVs, and a working fireplace that was perfect on a rainy Christmas Eve. The beds and linens were top notch. Breakfast was included, and they baked cookies in the afternoon. We could get a drink at the courtyard bar by the fire pit, and walk to everything we needed in La Jolla Cove, just up the hill. The staff were sweet and accommodating, going out of their way to make us feel welcome. Parking costs extra, though street parking is an option. Waking up on Christmas to blue skies and a sparkling sea restored our souls.

Pantai Inn has lovely oceanfront views, easy access to the shore without crowds, and a rooftop area if your room doesn't face the water. There are on-site parking options too. The daily breakfast was fresh and varied, which saved our family time and money. We also looked forward to the changing cookie flavors each afternoon, and the free water, soda, coffee, and tea helped us stay hydrated. Everyone we met on staff was friendly and helpful, and always around when we needed someone. There were a couple of small facility issues in our rooms, including hard water buildup around the bathroom faucets, and some things like a gym aren't available. The bigger concern was the booking system. After I hit the back button, our second room stopped showing as available, so we had to wait a few hours to schedule it. At check-in, the system also showed that someone in our party had changed our reservation dates by phone, but nobody had called and I never got an email about a change. Since it was off-season they could rebook us, but it could have caused a serious problem. Even with that, I'd choose this personalized boutique hotel over the larger places again. If you're debating a booking, I'd go for it.

The Bali-style hidden nooks around the hotel were beautiful, and the view was gorgeous. The location made it easy to see the sea lions. Breakfast was free and tasty, with breads, oatmeal, and both hot and cold dishes.

Room 324 was a charming, clean, and delightful place to spend three nights. It was spacious, though the bathroom was tiny. We enjoyed breakfast, and they washed and folded our laundry. The rooftop has couches, umbrellas, and a fireplace, with birds to watch and waves to listen to. The staff were courteous and helpful, although one evening a man on the phone with an AirPod took a while to assist me. The location was perfect for walking around La Jolla. Parking costs extra, but it's conveniently close if you bring a car. Keep in mind there's no elevator, just stairs.
