The Shoal La Jolla Beach

The location is great for the beach, right in downtown La Jolla and close to shops and food. The modern, clean rooms were comfortable, the beds and sheets felt good, and having no carpet was a big plus. The pool was good too. I'd stay again. There are a few drawbacks. The AC unit was loud, and the parking spaces were tight and small. We had to pay to park in their lot, which wasn't good. It's a renovated hotel in an older building, and footsteps from the unit above were noisy. Some padding on the floors upstairs could help.

After two months traveling around the US and staying everywhere from budget motels to luxury hotels, this is my favorite. It feels way better than a two-star place, with a cute retro property and great rooms. Tricia was a huge help after a stressful travel day, and the staff are amazing. Highly recommend. The pool and hot tub are great when the ocean's too chilly.

I picked this hotel for a wedding because the standard check-in was at 3 p.m. and the wedding started at 4, so I needed time to get ready. We paid just $30 for early check-in at 2 p.m., which was a great deal. The room price was good too. Finding your way around La Jolla can be tricky if you don't know it, but after driving there, what roads make sense anyway? The location is easier to reach than the heart of La Jolla, our Uber drivers had no trouble, and the in-and-out access is handy. Parking might not work well for trucks or large trucks, but my SUV fit and was easy to maneuver. The staff were lovely and helpful, both on the phone and in person. The room was clean and more spacious than it looked in the pictures. I'd definitely come back.
