Martha Castillo, our housekeeper, was so kind and did a great job. When we ran out of towels, she brought us more with a smile. I really enjoyed staying here. The location is great, with lots of things nearby, and the cleanliness stood out too.
The renovated room had a comfortable bed, lovely bedding, and great pillows. Still, the bathroom details were badly done: there was rust in the corners and other areas, and it wasn't clean. A room shouldn't be called renovated when those things have been overlooked. The hotel staff, valet included, deserve a 5, but management gets a zero from me. It feels understaffed or like the staffing is poorly managed. “ACE” parking runs the valet service, but Marriott needs to make sure a vendor it hires has enough people. It wasn't a bad stay overall, though management needs to pay attention to the small details.
The airport shuttle took 40 minutes to arrive after we called. We'd given our flight details the day before to arrange it, but were told to call again after landing. While we waited, we saw several Wyndham, Sheraton, and Hilton shuttles go by. The cafe was just okay, and the baked goods I tried were stale. The restaurant menus didn't appeal to me, and there were other places nearby, so there wasn't much reason to eat at the hotel. The location itself is okay, with restaurants in walking distance and the harbor nearby, though the Hilton, Grand Hyatt, and Embassy Suites are closer to the waterfront and in a better price range. This hotel's location seems better suited to business travelers. I hate giving it two stars, but this is honestly the worst Westin I've stayed at. It didn't meet my expectations for a four-star hotel and felt more like a Courtyard or DoubleTree. The “renovated rooms” seemed to have been updated years ago.
The rooms and amenities didn't feel up to Westin standards, and the price was outrageous for the quality. Marriott should hold the brand to higher standards than this. I've honestly had better stays at Courtyards.
I work nearby and sometimes drop into the lobby bar after work to watch sports, though I've never stayed at the hotel. Sometimes it's just a beer while I catch the end of a Padres game. Two years ago I watched a lot of the Olympics here, and today I watched an hour of the Winter Olympics. It's a great spot to relax with a drink.
