Homewood Suites by Hilton Richmond - Airport

The hotel itself isn’t bad, but the staff’s negative attitude made a difference. The young woman who checked me in was great; the rest of the experience went downhill. Nobody said anything outright rude, but the attitude came through, and perhaps I just got the wrong crew. There was no general information card in the room, so I had to call about breakfast hours and the other usual details. There was no ice bucket or plastic liner, and the ice machine was on the next floor. I was told to use the freezer’s ice maker, and if I was concerned about the bin’s cleanliness, I could wash it myself or put it in the dishwasher. I could also carry that bin down to the ice machine. When I asked for towels, I had to go downstairs and someone handed me two sets from behind the desk without asking how many I needed. We booked for two adults and three children, with two full beds and a pull-out, but apparently only two people need to bathe. I won’t book here again, even though it’s close to my family. So much for “Hilton Honors.”

I tried a Homewood Suites for the first time and may look for another hotel, even though I’m meant to stay almost three weeks. The room type I reserved was only available on the first floor, which I hate. My profile clearly requests a high floor, but the alternative offered was a downgrade to get a higher-floor room, so I tried that. When I entered, the floor was flooded, apparently from the dishwasher running. I went back to the desk, and they called maintenance. The staff mopped it up and the dishwasher wasn’t running, but I’m not sure whether the issue was fixed.

The room was clean and sanitary, and its layout was good. The location was convenient too, about a 14-minute drive from the Richmond Convention Center. We had to ask for an ironing board because the one that should have been in the room was missing. We paid extra for a kitchen suite so we could cook, save money, and spend time together, but the kitchen let us down. On the first night, the only pan was dirty and broken, with a broken handle and a lid that didn’t fit. The desk couldn’t replace it until the next day, so we went out for dinner. We got new pots and pans when we returned. Breakfast in the room the next morning was good, but after using the dishwasher, we came back to dirty dishes. It had run, but the soap door hadn’t opened and the tablet was still there. We had sandwiches and salads for dinner. The next morning, the same problem meant no clean plates, silverware, or pans for breakfast. After returning from the Convention Center, we got hand soap for the dishes and used the microwave for dinner. Its door hit the wall on the left and wouldn’t open all the way. It was still usable, but opening it too far could damage it. I was very upset to pay extra for a kitchen I could use perhaps 25% of the time, and we didn’t save much because we had to order in or eat out. I wouldn’t stay here again if I needed the kitchen, and the suite wasn’t worth the money to me. The blankets were lower quality than I’m used to at a Hilton-affiliated hotel. The pull-out couch was fine for my young daughter, but anyone over 100 pounds would find it unusable. I also think the $10-a-day parking charge is unnecessary. The lot was mostly empty, and people were still hanging around there at all hours of the night.

There was plenty of parking, although a sign said it would cost $10 starting April 1, 2025. The spacious lobby felt welcoming, and the staff were friendly and helpful throughout check-in and the rest of my visit. My room was clean, well-kept, and comfortable after a long day. It’s close to the airport but still quiet, which made the location work well for a traveler. I had a great stay at Homewood Suites Richmond VA Airport and would recommend it, especially if you’re passing through Richmond.
