We left without a refund and ended up at VOCO, where the stay was much better. We’d hoped to use the Presidential Suite while looking for a home nearby, but the place was freezing because the heat hadn’t been turned on, and the photos didn’t match what I’d expect from a Presidential Suite. I tried to be understanding with the host, but he was rude and acted like we were bothering him by expecting clean rooms and two working toilets. He even said he was irritated with me for complaining. It seemed like they either couldn’t afford to keep the property up or had other things going on and didn’t care. I’d avoid it until new owners or management take over.

The food was the standout for our hiking group. We thought the restaurant was the best in the region, even better than the over-hyped places in Lake Placid. We stayed in the Presidential Suite June 8-10, and it was unbelievable. Its peaceful view over the lake was lovely, and the Saranac Lake location made it easy to take a pontoon tour.

Zoe made the evening special, with great suggestions for both wine and food, and the live entertainment was a nice touch. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary at Sunset Bistro, and the meal was outstanding from appetizers through the main course and dessert. They even wrote “Happy Anniversary” in chocolate on the dessert plate. A perfect night!

The cabin’s exterior could use some upkeep: there were broken window panes, loose boards and very old shingles. Inside, though, everything was clean and worked properly, which surprised me given the rustic look outside. When we arrived at Cedar, the door was standing open, towels were on the floor and the beds weren’t made. I left a message, and Brian called back quickly to apologize and explain there’d been a problem getting the booking from Expedia. They offered us drinks and food while they cleaned the cabin. I appreciated how quickly they helped, and we look forward to returning.

We had great service, excellent food and a lovely atmosphere at Sunset Bistro. The deck is a real treat on a pleasant evening, with a view over Ambersand Bay on Lower Saranac Lake. It’s the best restaurant experience in the region.
