Free laundry is a real plus, and the old building has a charm of its own if you know what you're getting into. We keep coming back a couple of times a year, mostly because it's dog friendly and close to the locks, and have been doing that for about 10 years. Things have improved since our first stay, when the place felt shambolic. The sauna is open now, the fitness room has more and better equipment, the rooms are cleaner, and the AC sort of works. It was only spring, though, so I can't say how it'll do in summer. Plenty is still the same: some rooms are out of order, the staff are mostly indifferent, and the furniture is old. Back then, the pool, hot tub, restaurant, sauna, and fitness center were closed or nearly useless, conference rooms sat unused, the toilet barely flushed, the carpet was stained, and the AC didn't work. They handed us an ancient fan. This place won't suit everyone, but I find it kind of charming with the right expectations.

My wife and I left after one night because neither of us could get comfortable in the bed or pillows, and we barely slept. That's the main thing a hotel needs to get right, and the Ojibway didn't for us. The location is its strongest point, especially if you're a "Boat Nerd" wanting a good view near the Soo Locks. The building has lovely original woodwork and a historic feel, and downtown parking was decent. The staff were cordial, but seemed undertrained and had trouble with the registration process, which caused delays. There wasn't much else to make up for the sleep. The hotel bar was empty and had no atmosphere, the old restaurant is gone, and breakfast was just grab-and-go snacks in a hallway. For the price and the building's prestige, that wasn't acceptable. The place has potential, but operations felt lackluster and I don't see a bright future. There are more comfortable, accommodating hotels in the Sault Ste. Marie area that seem to value their guests. We won't return.

The beds were the problem for us. They were lumpy and too soft, and we had very uncomfortable, sleepless nights. The linens were clean but looked well used, while the pillows were nice. We miss the restaurant downstairs, where we often had a hot breakfast. Now you have to go out or settle for the cold takeaway items in the lobby, though hot coffee and tea are available. The location is great, on Main Street beside a beautiful park and the locks. There are shops and restaurants nearby, though many close out of season. Parking is free, the building is historic, prices are reasonable, and the front desk staff were pleasant. The decor is tired but serviceable. We'd visit again, especially if they put in new mattresses.

We loved being able to walk around town, and the views of the town, locks, and river were great. We upgraded to a spacious king suite, and the front desk staff were friendly and knew their stuff. The hotel's history was wonderful too. Breakfast was continental, basic but convenient and appreciated. With such a good location, we also had plenty of excellent full breakfast options nearby. We enjoyed the noon checkout, though we're not sure whether it's offered all year.

Everything was within walking distance, and this was a great place to stay. The classic foyer and atmosphere gave the hotel a lot of character. We had the King Suite on the 3rd floor, room 311. It had a fridge, microwave, cupboards, a seating area with television, a desk, and classic decor. After the long drive, the jacuzzi was just what this old body needed. My husband took a long shower at the same time, and neither of us lost water pressure or hot water.
